Regardless of the price, looks a lovely car.

I like them a lot, good daily car for those after something with a bit more cache.

Nice oil burning estate on ebay at the moment that I am very tempted by.

The biggest turn-off I had heard about was that a lot of get nicked, for parts for African taxis. Not sure if it still an issue but I'd hate having a car that I constantly fear will be stolen.

I used to live up in Princes Risborough and the local taxis driver had one. Most of the time he used a later one, but for special occasions he'd bring out one like this.

Very nice, but not a post '82 230, which is the best W123 to have . . .

I don't rate the estates as the ones I have driven didn't feel as solid or refined as the saloons. But even when the body is riddled with rot they feel incredibly solid. While it is difficult to pinpoint exactly why the cars feel special there is a certain something about the W123 (and maybe other Mercs - but my experience is limited). They don't feel like any other car in my experience, the way the seats are sprung is unusual but strangely comfortable, the big steering wheel and slightly vague, soft steering response. The view over the large, flat bonnet down to the mascot. The feel of a car that has been designed for comfort over 'sporty' handling.

I'd love a really nice 230E or 280E.

Sold for £3,200. Someone got a life long bargain I reckon.

That is a hell of a lot of car for the money. The first Merc I ever bought was a 300TE24 with 130,000 miles on the clock. Used it for work and to tow the race car. Sold it with 320,000 miles on the clock and I believe it is still going strong some 9 years later somewhere in Northern France. Amazing build quality. Although not currently owning a Nerc (apart from two smart cars, one for each foot) I bought a 98 300D estate which I did not keep long. That followed with a 450 SEL 6.9 then a 300 SEL 6.3 and a W124 Series S600L Brabus 7.3S. Really should have kept that car. frown Plus a 560SEC that I gave to my father in law. A 107 500SL that the missus had and probably a couple of others that I cannot think of. Still fancy an E500

On the other hand, if you have a really scensoredt example W123 and you need shot of it, you're guarenteed to at least get more than taking it to the local scrappy wink

I loved mine despite it being really quite rough (and thats being (polite).

Love the C123 coupes, turbocharged 5-cylinder 3 litre diesels and the 280 of course.

Is a W123 really that good? Are they really that bomb proof?

This was a time when Mercedes used to engineer cars to a standard not build them to a price.

Yes the W123s really were bombproof. The car that the OP has linked to was probably the cleanest that Ive seen for years. I bet that it even had a working hazard light switch!
