For desperately wanting a Mk 1 Escort biggrin
I know rust could be an issue....

Would love one too, particularly a 2-door. Rust is indeed an issue but a bigger issue is purchase price!

No not mad

I'd love another and so would my son who had my last one off me many years ago

(somehow he even sold that car for a profit over the £240 I paid at auction for it)

would cost considerably more than that now I'll be bound

Make sure you put some GOOD security on it!!!!! There have been LOTS of reports of them being stolen, particularly mkIIs. Apparently they make quite good Rally Cars???? ;-) I read a thread about an Irish chap who seemed to appear nosing around several cars at peoples homes prior to them being stolen soon after. It is thought there is a loophole somewhere via the DVLA where you can find out what address all cars are registered to by inputing the numberplate. I bet he has a field day at a Ford fair!

Not mad at all, you only live once.
I reckon all Petrolheads should have at least one drive in a decent Mk 1 or 2 Escort. Quick rack, LSD, no need for lots of power, small tyres, your be grinning all over your face, especially this time of year smile

agreed , simplest , most pure - adaptable road/rally old school fun car you can have , we all should have bought one and put it away when you could have picked one up for a few hundred quid in the eighties , hindsight is a wonderful thing of course. I haven't got reference to Escort footage but if you want to rekindle memories of the engine sound here,s what it sounds like in a Cortina.

At least I'm not completely mad (or we all are!)
Only problems i can see with getting one are parents and after talking to one of the technicians at college finding one that's not been turned into a race car like most have.
Also maybe rust, unless i could ever find one where someone else has done all the hard work!

Something like this you would have loads of fun in, http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/1361741.htm However, the price of them now kind of takes part of the fun away IMO.
Good if you own one, not so good if you want one.
I have owned 3 x Mk 1 Escorts, and 2 x Mk 2’s. Get this though, IF, I still had them, in there original condition, there combined value would be around £175,000 !
One of them was a bit special though smile
Don't you just love hindsight!

Personally I'd like to one day end up with a Mexico with bubble arches, they look so... sexy? Yeah that will do!

But how much would it have cost you to keep them in their original condition?

Definatly not mad. A Mk1 is the only Car which could tempt me out of my current 'toys' Alfa Guilia GTV.
A couple of weeks back there were 9 mark one's for sale on ebay as a batch all left hookers. They won't all of sold I don't imagine.

This one's tempting, but I'd swap the 1.3 for a Pinto, if I had the cash of course.

a mate of mine has begun to restore a mk1 AVO mexico which has been sat in his garage for the last 25 YEARS! the car has been there through 2 house moves, the birth and growing up of his 3 children, and its only now that he has found the time to begin work on the car.fortunately he had the hindsight to pick up various parts over the years including genuine ford inner wings which so he tells me are now virtually impossible to obtain even with the thickest of wallets he has all the original parts (some still in ford packaging) ready to be refitted once the bodywork is sorted and painted. he is very meticulous in his work and i have no doubt that this car will be a complete show stopper when its finished. maybe i could try to get a few photos to post during the build if anybody is intrested?

If you want a 2 door than the ridiculous cost of even half tidy examples will likely be a problem (unless you are a particularly loaded student). 4 doors aren't demanding utterly ridiculous prices just yet, but prices are going up as 2 doors get rarer.

I am currently rebuilding a BMW 2002 from barn find to trackday/hoonage car, but I am soooo into getting a mk1 or 2 Escort as my next project.

One question though.. can they easily be turned into a LHD cars? Reason is that I may have to drag it back to the Continent when I move, but for some reason there seems to be more shells available here in the UK (but RHD).

The cars are still everyday transport here in New Zealand. Here's a selection for sale http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/CategoryAttributeS...
Shipping is not that expensive especially if you take into account the premium the cars are selling for in the UK.

What's your plan? To buy by the container load so 3 cars are shipped for the price of one container wink
Those prices are in NZ$ so a $3500 Escort is around 1500 quid.

Plan was to buy from abroad (NZ is right hand drive country isn't it?)

But seems as you have the idea of a container full...... wink

NZ is RHD.
Is this the sort of car you were looking for?

Pink? No
Convertible? No

smile

Not that I'm picky but I'd be looking for a nice (preferably unmodified) 2 door.
Original looking body at least, unless it was bubble arches had been added.

Wouldn't be buying for a few years yet though frown
