I have been without a classic now for only 2 months after selling my Jag XKSS replica. I owned it for 12yrs. Also owned an E-type for ten years and many Jags befor that. I now own an Aston Martin DB7 Vantage Volante and a TVR Cerbera. I am getting the erge to own another modest classic after looking at my mates recently acquired mint Vauxhall velox. I am only thinking of spending about 5k. I know it's not a lot of money but i would rather not loose any money and would of course like to think in maybe 10yrs, that it would even have made a little. I do like Rovers paticularly P5B'S or P6,s as i have owned two P6's in the past. I think i might just scrape into XJ6 series one territory. Would love another one of those. What would you buy as a little investement for that sort of money? Would love your thoughts gents.

A year ago I bought a 1984 Alfa GTV6 because I've always loved them, rather than as an investment, but I am confident that it will only go up in value if I look after it.

Looks a bargain, all the hard work done. Put a dateless reg on it and I wouldn't think you could lose.

Could you?

A full restoration for 17k including an engine rebuild and a professional repaint. I think not. Yes you can lose.

You could move back into jaguar, but you would not find a good S1 XJ for 5k, not now.12k plus would be a fair price.I would suggest the best XJ40 V12 6 litre. They are at give away prices yet extremely rare. I had a 40, 4 litre majestic major a few years back with full history absolutely Mint, sold for £7k. Same car now would be under £5k.Even the very best 40 can be had for very little monies so well worth a look. I cannot think that the 40 will ever be worth vast sums, but quality motoring need not be at a premium price.

As I'm sure you're aware the car may not depreciate but it will still need money spent on keeping it running.

With this in mind why not look at some 80's machinery which has plentiful parts supply. I was thinking Mk1 Golf GTi, Escort XR3i/ RS Turbo, Capri 2.8i, BMW M5 E28, Merc 107 SL.

These may not float your boat in comparison with what you've been used to, but they are where I'd be put mine.

Good!! That means the XJ6 Series 1 I picked up in August was a bargain at £800.

Not really an investment... prices on SD1's are low and don't really change that much even for the twin plenum. Lower spec cars like the single plenum, and the 2600 can be had for peanuts. We picked up a 46,000 mile 2600 on it's second owner, with all it's history, taxed and tested for £250.

Soxboy, you could be right. The eighties cars may well be the next sought after cars by the then 18yr olds. Now that those lads are in their late thirties and could now maybe afford the RS turbo they always wanted, will probebley make them a good investement. Got to say though, i dont think i would be able to resist that Bentley, what a car for 5k.

Quite right,70s 80s cars are on the up, especially Jaguar. A low mileage 1974(26K) XJ6 sold recently for £6500.

RW774,I recognise that reg. Would that be a certain Mr Hawthorns D-type now owned by Nigel W.?? £12k for a series 1 xj!! are you on drugs or what? I paid £1200 for mine and thought i did well when i sold it for £2500. I saw a little gem of one the other day for £5k, one owner as well.

Other thoughts:

XJ-S (best you can get for 5k)
Merc 450SLC
BMW 6 series
Merc W123, esp coupe
Merc S class (Ronin one W116?)

basically the best you can get for the money of cars which people wanted when younger but couldn't afford, or ones which have been barried and are hardly any left of. An example of the latter is the prices now being fetched for MkII Escorts.

my 72 Scimitar is probobly 2-3k maximum at the moment, and it is a whole lotta useable Classic in my opinion. They are not worth anything so nobody has really looked after them, most are scrapped for spares . My is a tidy one in white / black leather, so I am hoping it will go up in value a little in a few years when they are really scarce and none left! It
may never go over 5k but at least my money is safe and it won't rust!

Some nice cars there. Have had two v12 XJS's and loved both of them. They seem to be doing quite well price wise, and i would'nt mind another, although they were quite expensive to run. My Cerbera costs about £1000 per service, and i have just paid £1500 to have the plugs and coil pack changed on the Aston, so dont really want anything to dear to run.

£1200 was when you had that pink Ben Sherman and green Kipper tie man. Age tends to do that to us old farts. Hurst Park, at the classic car show, sold a XJ S1 for £12k. Thats` a fact man. The D that won Le Mans in 55 was 774 RW. Not Mr Hawthorns, but Jaguars`.Mikes dad did put an order in 53 for a C ,for young Mike but thats another story. Nigel`s D is something I have already posted about many times . Re the drugs,I need something to cure my lust for Christine Blakeley, apart from what you will suggest at your next posting for that, nothing else needed.

I must admit to a certain amount of lusting at Miss Blakeley myself, great legs. I would'nt recomend any cure for this affliction, as i would consider this symptom as completely normal. Carry on lusting. biggrin
