They tend to be make/era specific generally, so depends on what info you're looking for?

Thanks for the advice. I am trying to track a car that was exported to the USA in about 1981. So what I wanted was discover whether there were any records held in the US on UK cars imported to the US by UK registration number or any other means. Really looking for a needle in a haystack but there may be some database that could help me somewhere?

probably on a port by port basis; you'd at least need to know what port it was imported into, or the state it was registered in.

I've been through this process whilst researching a car's history for a client. The records held are sketchy at best, the DMV will (or at least did)allow you to search for a car however you need to know most of its current details.

If it's a relativley rare car one of the best points of contact is the owners club, in my case I eventualy tracked down the current owner who in turn was a massive help and was as interested in the earlier history of his car as I was the modern history

Thanks guys for the replies. I now know that it was sold in April 1983 and exported to the US. However, I do not know what port it left from or landed!! Looks an impossible task to be honest, unless the clubs can help. I will check out the DMV website and perhaps search on the old UK registration, as I think I am correct in saying that some important UK registered cars still drive around in the US with their UK registration. Anyone know whether that is correct or perhaps they still display the UK reg on the front but must have a US plate on the rear?
