I wonder if it'll be cheaper than if it had been in its orginal state?
Surely a toolroom copy would have been a better idea than ruining, sorry updating, an original.
Way to like a Beacham (sic?) Jag to me.

Some things in life need to be left well alone, the 300SL being one of them.
For sale, I would think because whoever commissioned it was probably very dissapointed with the end result. The original product was very advanced, this example is just plain orrible.

+1 for me this just does not work. It just misses the whole point of the gullwing. The engine I could live with. The rest from wheels to interior is just beyond comprehension

Does anyone know what percentage 11 cars is of the number of 300SL's in circulation?

From a google it appears from the Original Mercedes SL book that there were 1400 GullWings made. While I expect many of these cars still to be in circulation, there will be quite a few that have died.

I am astonished that the firm would modify 11 300SL's like this.

Agreed. A beautiful classic, ruined.

According to AMG Project Manager Volker Niewig, the project was initiated following a request by the Royal Family of Brunei.
Well, they have never been known for the tasteful things they have done to their collection.

Scum.

I wouldnt be supprised if the gullwings that were used were beyond repair or consisted entirely of a chassis plate and a gear knob wink would Merc even be allowed to make and sell a 50's 300SL (crash testing / saftey regs compliance etc)

If Volkswagen Earwig and his mates at NFG ( No fking Good) need a project, the `Bismarck` remaims unrestored.

As a Hotrodder I have been known to take a hacksaw to some old metal. But I also recognise that some cars should not be touched and the Gullwing is one of those.

My biggest problem with these cars is that it was not necessary to cut up the original cars. I would be a lot cheaper to go to "Gullwing GmbH" in Germany and use one of their reproduction Ali bodies. They are near perfect. I have always fancied a 300SL with an AMG V12 engine and would use a Gullwing GmbH body for my project if I had the money.

Check this out for how good they are

These individuals ruin these cars , just because they can and have the money to do so. I could suggest several charities who would benefit from the cost of creating this abortion. Degrades the industry totally.

Agreed man, building a car from scratch using modern up to date mechanicals, is a far better option than ruining an original good car. There should be preservation orders on these rare vehciles so they have to be kept original.

I could cope with that except those dreadful wheels. They look like under sized Porsche cup alloys.
Actually the more I look at the whole thing the proportions look a bit wrong - could just be the images.
