Torrential is an understatement, it took out half the field out and there was heavy damage to a mustang in the same race.

Great watching them fish tailing around the circuit though !

We also went to Angouleme for weekend and had great time. The atmosphere is very laid back and racing interesting. The rain was just unbelievable.
Our first time there but enoyed more than Classic Le Mans due to general atmosphere .

Arrived home yesterday from Angouleme (via Le Mans) having thoroughly enjoyed the weekend!!! Brian, I spotted your Aeromax parked up and took a few shots. What wonderful cars, atmosphere and company. Here's a link to all my video and photos. :0)

Was at Goodwood on Sunday and really picked up the bug for historic/classic racing.

For those who have done both, how do Angouleme and the Revival compare?

1st time at Angouleme for me (have a holiday home an hour away), but have done Goodwood three times.

Goodwood puts on a great show, real atmosphere, air shows, all that. Angouleme somehow feels more 'real'. Apart from the cars on circuit nothing is stage managed, yet if you look back at photos from the 30's and 40's it really doesnt look that different.

Angouleme is also a much smaller event, just a few thousand spectators and easy to park and walk around. Costs much less also, we got flights car hire, fuel and airport parking and it still came to less than two tickets for Goodwood and a Grandstand ticket on race day.

I had the Saturday rally organised, the press passes too, but got called to Goodwood and the weather was perfect. Perhaps it was fate that in an open car with no hood or wipers that it happened that way! I shall, all being equal, be there next year though. A wonderful event.

Quite a lot of classics on the Portsmouth to Le Havre ferry last Wednesday night, I guess they were off to Angouleme. We stopped there a few years ago en route to the south and wasn't surprised to see that the lap record when F1 was last held (back in the early 50s, I think) was approximately 45mph! Very twisty but a nice place. May try to get there next year.

Don't even try and compare. One goes to the end of the world to recreate the era of the 50s/60s with racing entry by invitation only. Acapella singers, phoney watch and nylon salesmen, an allotment with a UXB - you name it Goodwood does it to recreate the feel. Then the racing - you won't see better anywhere.

Contrast that to Angouleme where (not sure if it still the case these days) you actually get paid for coming over and racing on a street circuit which isn't very safe at all. Where else have you seen the race stop so an edwardian monster can do a three point turn to get round the hairpin? But Angouleme is a lot of fun just the same in a much softer and friendly way and is an event that should be attended at some time in your life. Problem is, it always conflicts with Goodwood (Just as the Festival of Speed always clashes with Le Mans Classic) and Goodwood is far better in my humble opinion.

However, if you liked the Revival then the one to visit next year is the Le Mans Classic in July. A fabulous event and nowhere near as far to travel as Angouleme. Now that event you really will enjoy.

It was my first time at Angouleme and really it's like comparing Apples with Oranges (or what-ever the expression is); if you want to see a huge selection of great cars combined with fantastic racing it has to be Goodwood (where it does help a geat deal to have the 'right' passes), but for a fun holiday few days abroad combined with some nice cars, Angouleme has its charms - watching 18 Bugattis from 1925 to 1935 charging round a street circuit through 'perod' French architecture was VERY special.

mogv8 is this just for fia stuff?

Looks interesting.

Hi Karen / Steve - did not realise the France trip was based around a race event! (Not that I had a working TVR).

Cool - found there website. Not an event any of my cars could do. But it is the sort of thing I might do one year with the Surrey TVR mob (need to build my car first). Looks fun though and combined with french cooking could be something the wife might be for (long way with ear defenders on though! - iPod!

We are all taking our wives with us (try leaving Lady S at home)and taking 4 days to do the short trip to Angouleme by stopping off at various chateaux each night to give us time to sample the great food and more importantly the wine, cognac, champagne etc
