Ultimate engine, the BD series???
Discussion
what is your opinion of the ultimate engine?i love the bdg engines as they sound absolutely fantastic, they stand out a mile. the reason i out this in the classic car section is to be honest the old engines are more fun, i'd love to have a bdt out of the rs200 in my mk2 escort, infact scrap that id be quite happy with an rs200 (ive seen em going for over 100k,whats that about!!!!)
anyway put your opinion down...

I agree, you can’t beat a Mk 1 or 2 BDA/G/X Escort at 9000rpm in a forest, awesome noise, even from inside the car Have to admit, a TR8 comes close though!
One of the best engine sounds IMO is the BRM V16, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fZMPDCNyQxE that puts the hairs on the back of your neck up!

The BDA made the Escort into an international winner, the BRM engine bye the way was an H 16, the youtube clip does sound like two V8's!

While it makes the ultimate noise, I don't think you could really argue that the BRM H16 was a classic in terms of any noticible success. It was very heavy, had heavy fuel consumption, and what was worse the two-stage superchargers gave logarithmic boost making it undrivable. Mark A S said:

Fine in a Spitfire atmore or less constant revs, but hopeless for balancing a car on the throttle.

The You-Tube clip was of a BRM V16 1.5 litre engine from the mid 1950's.
The BRM H16 engine was a 3 litre, unsupercharged, unit dating to the 1966 series of GPs when the engine capacity was increased from 1.5 litres to 3 litres and very few 3 litre engines were available.
The H16 was used by BRM and Lotus in the Type 43, before the DFV came along in early 1967, in the Lotus Type 49.
The H16 was not a particular success!
The V16 does indeed sound magnificent when on full chat.....although nowadays it rarely is given 'the full beans' because of it's fragile nature!

I stand corrected, the first BRM engine was a V layout as you point out.The BRM H16 engine was a 3 litre, unsupercharged, unit dating to the 1966 series of GPs when the engine capacity was increased from 1.5 litres to 3 litres and very few 3 litre engines were available.
