Can anyone help please? I am trying to track down a car owned by my father in law in the 1950's It was a vintage Bentley and in about 1964 the trail just goes cold. I think there is a chance it was exported. Does anyone know if there is any kind of ledger that is kept, other than the DVLA who are singularly unhelpful, by Customs and Excise or indeed by any other authority that might tell me where it went?

Have you tried the Bentley Owners Club? They seem to be very active in tracking the cars.

VSCC might be worth a try as well. Failing that a mention in Classic & Sports Car might get something.

What are the details of the car?

It was a 3 litre with Vanden Plas body and we do not have the chassis number. He recalls the registration to be RG 5212. I have tried the BDC but not the VSCC. thank for the advice.

Can't help with the main request, but the register of Vintage Bentleys has been published in the back of the various Hay books, and appears on line...
http://www.vintagebentleys.org/bentley-registry/pa... So you may be able to find the car. You could also ask that site to help.
A months ago a thread gave a link to registration searches.

http://www.numberplates.com/issued.aspx says RG is a series issued from 1928 - which is late for a Cricklewood 3 litre, but the car might have been re-registed.

The VdP body list has also been published as an appendix in a book on the coachworks, but as Bentley in the 20's (and Chas Follett / Alvis* in the 30s) were the main customer it might not be so much help. (Wiki says 700 Bentley had Vdp Coachwork)

The VSCC library may have some reports from the 50's which may help identify the car.

  • The other night I drove the BiL's VdP Sp20 Alvis to the local VSCC meet.
