During an event a couple of weeks ago on an incredibly dusty field my competition Midget 1500 must have consumed more powder than Amie Winehouse. It only has sock filters. I cleaned the intake trumpets out with carb cleaner and it ran out dark brown! Watching the videos of this weekend’s PCT the car seems to be smoking more than normal so now I’m worried that grit has got in the engine and damaged it. I’m down to do Prescott on the 27th and I don’t want to go up the hill laying down a smokescreen. To make matters worse the diff blew so I can’t test my smoking theory except stationary, when it doesn’t seem too bad.

Plan is to rebuild the engine over the winter so I’m looking for a temporary fix.

Can I flush the engine to get rid of any remaining grit?

Anyone recommend a stop smoke product (other than Nicorette)?

What about that American Technology Engine restore? (I have a can here for complex reasons)

Thanks

Buffalo

Have you drained the oil out of the sump..? What does it look like..? I'd be looking there for "bits" (even just dust and grit) - if you had drawn in a lot of dust then there is a chance that it might be burning off - hence smoke, but with dust comes abrasion...

I think you're mad for not running a proper high flow filter. You don't lose power by fitting (a decent) one, but you run a lot of risk without. Rally cars often run more than one filter for that reason and I don't believe those sock filters are worth the cost to buy them!
