I am really keen on either of these. It is part investment an part plaything but I am not sure which will hold its value/appreciate best.

I am also not a Porsche expert so I wonder if anyone has an opinion on which type (as there is so many) is most highly prized. An 80's Turbo was the first car that realy got me a kid and now I want to realise this dream but I can be persuaded off if other variants are more appropriate for meeting the twin requirments of investment and plaything.

here's the twist - I have 30K to spend. Any guidance much appreciated.

What a nice position to be in. smile

Have you considered an early 90s 964 Turbo?

imo you should buy which one you want to own/drive the most.

with the amount you have to spend, have you considered something like:

and a db7 / virage?

again very much imo, but all undervalued at present.

At this moment, 30k is not going to buy you a nice DBS. it might buy you a bag of trouble. I would look seriously before inflation gets worse.

This is what I would look at if I were you -

I see that there is no mileage quoted, but it doesn't seem too tatty. As with any worthwhile car you wil still need to budget to invest in it, but for my money that would give you both fun and a safe place for your money. Porsches, yes, very nice, but they don't have the same rarity.

Here's an Aston for under your budget from a well known specialist:

But if I were in your shoes it would be a 3.3 or 3.6 964 Turbo all the way. smile

Oh my word thats pretty! lick

I assume the armourfend they refer to in the advert is visible in pic 2 as a line across the bonnet just above the badge!? Is this like a 'wrap' to defend against stonechips?

How about an early 930 Turbo:

A bit more Punk than the safari-suited Aston I posted earlier from a similar vintage. cool

Loved my 930 3.3 Turbo, fairly cheap to repair and most parts available still and very easy to tune to silly horse power.

At the risk of this getting a bit repetitive, another vote for the 930 3.3.
Loved mine and it was completely reliable in the 40k miles I did in it.

They wear well mechanically and the interior, and a simple car that can cope with a few mod's if you're so inclined, not to mention the classic lines.

I liked it so much I've actually started looking at prices again recently.......

I would also agree here. The Aston's are lovely and I've personally always fancied an early V8 Vantage but having investigated them, be under no allusions as to how much they cost to run.

Simply put, £30K will buy you a superb 911 Turbo or a very average Aston.

day to day I think this would be a fantastic car & every bit as quick as a turbo.

My wife fell in love with a 6 Cylinder DBS a fair few years back at the Ally Pally show. We had the money to actually buy it, but when I told her to speak to the dealer about how much things like a head gasket repair would be, she ran a mile. biggrin

As it says on http://www.astonmartins.com/misc/your_first_aston....

Definition of an optimist...................
''A person who thinks that they can just afford to run an Aston Martin''

Peter Dron, Daily Telegraph

Lovely cars though.
But buy one someone else has spent all their money on.

Thanks for the input - it looks like I should look more closely at the carrera, the 930 turbo in the right colour though would be the ticket....going off the AM idea rapidly.

I think the big bumpered 911 turbos are very undervalued considering how many of them graced bedroom wall posters. Cars that go up in value are usualy ones that people who are old enough to have enough money to spoil themselves dreamed of when they were 14. Not many 14 year olds facied an AM. Usability, competition history and ease of upkeep also go for Porsche.
