Although a Lancia owner, I'm not that clued up on Gammas - other than to say the problems that were associated with them have been solved. They are stunning looking cars and many Lancia owners still use them regularly.

If you have questions I would ask here: http://www.gammaconsortium.com/

It looks a real beaut !

Looks like a bright old thing - didn't Ronald "Steady" Barker (CAR magazine) have a thing for these?ISTR he had several of them!

Was the chief problem not related to the fact that in order to simplify things, the engine ancillaries were run off the same belt as the camshaft - the cambelt in other words? This had the effect that if you started a cold engine on full lock the belt would jump and lunch the engine.

But gorgeous cars and I quite want one. I have the brochure somewhere for the Gamma saloon that my parents never bought (they had a Beta instead).

Oh not good memories! I bought a four door saloon in silver about twenty odd years ago when the coupe's were starting to fetch big money (£5k would you believe - same as now). This particular car was totally immaculate apart from the lunched engine caused by exactly what you have described. It sat on one side of our double garage for nearly two years (parts were scarce then) and after much conjoling I ended up braking it for spares. It had 22k miles on the clock and the styling was straight out of a sci-fi movie.

Regrets that it wasn't a coupe promped the action to break it but I got my money back which is a very rare thing for a Lancia laugh

Wouldn't you be better looking for a 90s maserati bi-turbo?

Similar money and 15 years younger

Friend of mines dad had a couple as company cars: he got them as the original guy was based in London, so wasn't getting enough use out of it; we were in Bedfordshire. Little did they realise my mates dad got the train to work, from the station 200yds away, & used the Lancia to blast to the pub each evening afer work. A 3 mile straight line trip, with a stop to pick me up on the way. Beautiul car, if someone else was paying...I think both survived a while, probably because there were only two corners involved - no strain on the cambelt!

I must make a confession, the Gamma Coupe is one of my absolute favourite cars of all time! Every time I see one I get goose bumps. I have owned a few but not for some years now. an S2 Auto in Black with Cream Leather, I would have to buy it at any price.

I remember in 1979 my dad bought one new and as a 9 year old kid it was simply the coolest car I had ever seen, and I still think the same today.

Has anyone got an absolutely perfect S2 Auto for me?

I've not seen that before, but I'm not sure about it. I'm a big fan of shooting brakes, but to me that has a bit too much of the old Audi 100 Avant about it.

How about the Scala instead? It was being sold by Bauer Millett a couple of years ago:

hahaha, he can call it "Bruno Mogano with gold velour interior " all he likes, it's still metallic brown and beige, but still, a nice example..with a bit of TLC and another grand or so spent it's got years left in it.

What you really want is the the completely-'80s Ermenegildo Zegna cloth the later ones had.

Edit - these must be the prime candidates for an electric power steering conversion.

Loved these! There's the coupe:

And the berlina:

When the engine is sorted this is a seriously fine car.
