bit of an odd request this one, but to cut a long story short i work for Wollaston MINI in Northampton and we are having a sixties themed weekend coming up to celebrate the launch of the new Mayfair and Camden models.

There is going to be a classic Mini in the showroom, possibly mod scooters out the front and a general sixites theme to the weekend, in that respect we intend to make a little display with a red, white and blue MINI to hark back to the Italian Job.

We thought it might be nice to get a classic van parked up all weekend with the doors open by the three MINI's with some fake gold inside, so, if you have something classic like a Commer, Dormobile or even a gold italian van with "Sicurezza" written down the side that you don't mind being lending us for a few days then please let me know.

Equally if you think it is a silly idea, do tell!

id guess that seen it was bmw's money that paid for the last 7 or so years of the mini, all the injection and ecu development that allowed them to pass the emmisions laws, the money they provided to get british motor heritage onto a (fairly) stable base, which allows them to continue to produce genuine panels, and of course the enthusiasm that bmw still have for the old mini in sponsoring large mini events (like the IMM) allows them some involvment

If that was the case then I'd rather they'd let OUR mini die an honourable death.

These marketing exercises using the proper mini's heritage for a totally different (and foreign owned) car really piss me off.

By all means sing the BMWs praises, but stop the kidding and the bullst.

graham.

ive no interest in the bmw mini at all, im old mini through and through.

however, im also a realist who understands how bmws money and involvment in the later years of rover/bmh set the (old) mini up in very, very good stead for years to come.

look at it this way, if bhm had been allowed to vanish, or bmws interest had been zero, then there would be now no genuine panels, shells, subframes etc etc,

no kidding, no bullst.

if you wish to knash you teeth at the thought of the nasty germans 'stealing' the mini name, then good luck to you, i, on the other hand am glad to see a factory in the uk thats still making cars that people want to buy,

im also happy that i can still get decent parts for my old mini, and if i have to nod my head to bmw, then so be it.

I think you give the Germans too much credit (and you choose to pillory them as a race, incidentally).

They did nothing for the Morris 1000, MGB or TR6, but there's no problem getting quality spares for them, and the proper mini would have had no problem either. smile

is that yours? can i borrow it!?!

the orginal question was a simple request, not an excuse to start another tired old slanging match, the weekend is a celebration of all things Mini/MINI as was the official 50th celebrations at Silverstone in July.

my original post stated that there would be a sixties weekend with things like mod scooters et cetera, we've chosen the sixties as it was when the MINI took off despite being a car for fifties, britain... there will be new models and old and all are welcome... if you don't like the MINI then don't turn up - simple as!

Nick, no, rene would probably have something to say about that!

FACTS never get tired, and it's my first comment on the subject.

Some of us can remember the launch of the proper mini, grew up with it, and cherish it.

Try to pass off a new 'beetle' as a replacement for its iconic relation and you'll get the same entirely understandable reaction.

Loyalty is a commendable trait where I come from. smile
