The 360 was an underrated car; I had a 360GLS which was one of the best cars I have owned. Although the suspension was a bit soft for some, it was a very tough & reliable car. The 2 litre Volvo ( as opposed to the 1.4 Renault )was a superb unit, if a bit thirsty ( 25-28 mpg). The early ones ( mine was a Y reg ) were very well put together, and were properly engineered, so working on the engine etc was straightforward. The GLT was the last model, and although it was supposed to be quicker than the GLS, I found little difference in performance.
Clarkson on video described these as a 'hatefull car'.
However having recently had one (an immaculate 84 340 one owner with less than 40k miles) I think he was wrong.
In today's world an old 3 series rwd volvo is actually quite fun, decent steering (this one had no pas), precise g/box, and so easy to play with rwd due to such low grip (skinny tyres, narrow track, rubbish soft suspension).
Cant think of a cheaper / easier intro to RWD driving.
next step would be an mx5 after using a volvo 340 to learn the basics of RWD
