Please could someone point me in the direction of a decent book on cars? Vague question I know but I'm after something that will teach me a bit more about the mechanics of cars. I stripped down an old V6 as a kid and I'm fairly mechanically minded (I passed a few aeronatical engineering exams) so I don't want something too basic, that said my knowledge is patchy at best so something comprehensive would also be good.

Thanks in advance all!

If you can afford it, there's nothing like doing somehting hands-on to help. So how about finding an old A series engine, then read David Vizards (??) book on tuning the A-series engine. You'll learn a lot being hands on, but of course thats the expensive way of doing things.

Hillier's Fundamentals of Motor Vehicle technology is quite a good book, but it might be a bit basic. There are a few editions including advanced vehicle diagnostics and electrical systems.

yes If it's actual, practical mechanical skills you want (rather than design theory), you really can't beat getting your hands dirty. Even a good old-fashioned Haynes manual is good enough, if you use it to strip and rebuild something basic. If you get a Mini, a Minor or a Midget, you could learn the basics with Haynes then move on to David Vizard when you want to gain a slightly deeper understanding.
