I've finally sold my E30 M3 (it still hurts, it was only yesterday afternoon) and I was thinking of getting something with a spot of modern classic appeal in order to see out the remaining 6 months left on my classic policy.

So I scoured PH Classifieds closely and found a couple of likely contenders- one being a Porsche 944 S2 and the other being a TVR Chimaera. All was right with the world. But then I hit upon a snag in that apparently I cannot swap my current policy to the 944 as the 'car's aren't similar enough' and the Chim isn't old enough (although I was half-expecting the Chim to be an issue). I have asked and there's not actually a list of acceptable cars I just have to keep trying until I find a car that is accepted by their mysterious criteria!!

Any suggestions? Budget is up to £8k but I'd prefer to keep it around the £5k mark- and I don't need 4 seats as this is a third car, I'd like RWD, relatively reasonable running costs, a decent slug of performance and something that is unlikely to depreciate much in the next couple of years with perhaps, if I'm really cheeky, the potential for a bit of appreciation if I spend a bit of cash on keeping it properly fettled. Oh, and I'm thinking mid 80s to early 90s fodder.

And no, this is not a lightly disguised what car thread… honest…

But I do already have an MX5 so that's out.

Apologies if I'm missing something obvious here, but why not cancel your policy, get a refund for the outstanding 6 months and buy something that you actually want?

I would have thought the E30 M3 and 944 S2 would the the same age, but there you go...

So, and 80s classic? Where do we start?
944 Turbo
928 S4/GT/GTS
BMW 6 series
sierra cosworth (if you can find an original, non molested one)
Esprit?
Jag XJ12

I could go on...!!

I can cancel it and will if it comes to it but the calculation for the refund with almost 6 months to go is -£7 so if I can get 6 months for 'free' by picking the right car then all the better!

Although I can't see how I can get much more similar than the 944 so I will probably try another couple of cars and then resort to canceling.

BMW 2002 or how about an E9 CSL?
A decent 928 would be fun
Maserati Gibili Cup, if you can find one!
Porsche 993
Jensen Interceptor for the experience
Decent XJ-S, V12
Ferrari 328 maybe, if you have the cash.
Mercedes ofer some amazing 1960's models for summer cruising.
Go truly mad and buy a Corvette
Audi RS2....modern classic and seriously quick.
BMW Alpina B10 Bi Turbo for some cross Europe blasts or a Lotus Carlton.

What about a Lotus Elan M100...not quite RWD though...! They are amazing cars for the money, the handling is superb ( much better than any TVR )and the performance is very quick with the turbo ( Isuzu-Lotus 1.6 16 v 160BHP ). I was not too keen on them until I was driven around Croft race circuit in one, and the only car we could not get past was a supercharged Elise. Maybe not for the purists, but the M100 still has the Lotus DNA.

If the insurer is saying that a 944 is not similar enough to the M3 they must be trying to restrict you to 2/4 door, 4 seat saloons, hatchbacks etc.

(Insurance companies, don't you just love 'em - clearly no idea what an M3 is!)

On that basis a 190 Merc, Sapphire Cosworth or Integrale seem a good bet
