Just returned home after driving up on the highest road in Europe, 2802m altitude. Three and a half hours or so. Lunch in Jausiers, then drive back four hours, different route, lot of single track.
Me in the '64 MK II 3.8, friends in highly modded Midget, Eagle E type S I 3.8 and Type 35 rep. (not your average rubbish though)
Just for fun and fun it was!
Spaghetti bolognese, 6.50 euros.
Time, 09h00 to 20h00.
Fuel, oil and brake pads, ??????
Is this reasonable?

Very much so. Worth every drop of oil and I am sure the meal was not the best but the drive will live with each of you for many years.

Read about 2 chaps on the Lions rugby tour who drove from Milawi in a not so young Land Rover to enjoy the first two tests. 7,000 miles round trip and they slept outside on the journey.

I once did an overnighter to Berlin, not much fun but an epic experience.

This made me laugh, not driven but my OH went with me all the way to Dubai (I was on business) just so she could have the room service Spag bol in the Emirates Tower Hotel!

Or perhaps just to keep an eye on me?

I always used to tell the waitress in the Hilton in Dubai that the only reason I agreed to do business trips there was for her Guacamole.

As to driving all day in a Mk2 for a bit SpagBol all I can say is

And you stopped for lunch?

Any excuse will do.
Get out there and drive it.

She's my daily driver when I'm here.
Gets just as many looks and photos on Casino Square as any Lambo, Spyker, et al.
She also does Le Mans with no motorways, around 2500km round trip.

Not in anything exotic but we did drive a round trip of 400 miles from central Brittany to Le Mans just for a meal last October. Drove there, ate, turned round and drove back. Well worth it and would have been even better in something more interesting than a Citroen C5 boxedin

Phib,
Where's Rame? Still on your father's estate?
Did you pay the ferryman?
250 LM, now that is impressive!

How about a 1,150 km return drive across western Siberia to pick up 6 months supply of Dog / catfood !!
7 hours out , return 6 1/2 hrs on some of the worse roads you can imagine potholes 5" deep in places ....and stopped by the Police twice , both times smiled showed my UK license , 120 km/hr in an 80 limit confused cop looks at license ""Engliski"" off you go .......no problem .

Would love to do this trip in an E-type .....dont think the suspension would like it though !!

Thanks for the recomendation - will try and get there next time we are over. The trip to Le Mans was to take partners to the restaurant we use when we go for the race which they had heard such good things about. Fortunately, even away from the race atmosphere it was good and appreciated by all!

Alright,
How about a 2500km round trip with a convoy of three or four old cars and an AJS, average age of vehicles, 40 years old. Departing Cannes and heading north-west. (No motorways were used in the production of this epic) Driving on some of the best curvy and straight roads you can imagine.
Plenty of watering holes en route. Police smiling and waving as the convoy passes.
And we punish ourselves in this way every year around mid June. All for a few beers and a BBQ or two. Oh, and a bit of motor racing.
