You may get a more qalified response in the Jaguar forum. I wouldnt like to guess without seeing the car, but its a buyers market at the minute, or at least it is over here.

If it's rotten undeneath then it will need a fortune spending on it.

Pay close attention to the doors and at the front bulkhead, any signs of sagging and run away.

Quickly.

You can get floor pans for about £140, so a shot underneath needn't be the end of the world.
Try and check inside the front wheel arch where the bonnet hinge meets the front frame, as thouroughly as you can, the hinges tend to rust due to water getting trapped. Best way to check is totally remove the headlight and assembly on either side, if of course that's possible.
Check the Sills as well as you can, they have an outer skin, so if they appear outwardly rusted again it may not be too bad, but if there is rust further in then, well, that's a structural nightmare (maybe).
Remember with E Types any part you need is out there, sometimes for less money than you may think (especially if the part was shared with an XJ6 for example wink) and sometimes for a bit more than expected.
Prices vary wildly, lowest are probablt the series 2 2 + 2 models, least desireable but IMHO all round a really balanced E Type model.
Most expensive are the early flat floored Series 1 cars, and beyond that of course are the lightweights / racers etc and the last 50 Series 3 cars.

If this is moved to the yesterdays heroes forum there are several PH'ers there with E Types. I'm sure they'll help out. I've reported the OP to the mods smile

I'm well up on E-types but sadly not with the UK market.

Much depends on whether it's a desirable S1 or the less desirable 2+2 / S2 models.

Series 1's in need of complete restoration are in the order of £15k right now.

Will cost somewhere in the order of £45k to restore well!

If it's a later one then I'm not sure of current prices

You have to be joking! A full restoration of a series 1 will cost in the order of double the sum quoted. Start with the engine at £4,000, then a gearbox will cost a fortune if you can find a Moss box and Jaguar boxes are virtually unobtanium now. Wheels and tyres add getting on for £2,000 and we are already getting close to £10,000. A bonnet? Around £5,000 if memory serves. Trim, various parts etc and we can easily arrive at a minimum of £25,000 before we even start to strip the car and factor in the labour costs. It will take a bare minimum of six months, probably much longer, to rebuild and at £40 per hour you can see where you are going. A good respray will be at least £4,000 with VAT. You can do it for less but up to you. I'm not sure you could find a series 1 for the price quoted unless it is a complete wreck either.

I can't believe these prices. I bought a fhc series 1 about 5 years ago - with a very good body (needed some small work) but hadn't run for a couple of years for less than 10k.
The engine rebuild only cost about £1000 I think - we did all the work at home. Not to concours or show standard - just to very good solid car standard. But it continues - it needs more every year...moneypit

Fair enough! I know you have a lot of experience in this area.

I wasn't including any labour costs - assuming doing the work yourself and purchasing a complete bodyshell from somewhere like Martin Robey's or Hutsons.

I don't think many Series 1's come up now for restoration but I've seen them for circa £15k

When I was looking at rebuilding my XK150's engine at the start of the year I was being quoted prices from about £3.5K (from people I've heard too many horror stories about) to £8.5 for something fairly basic. If you want to do something special (like be able to put the car on a dyno and get the numbers Jaguar claimed all those years back) then I suppose the sky is the limit. Most good places were talking £5K upwards with the engine already out and just delivered back to you complete. Carbs, box, clutch etc, they were all extra.

The labour is a large part of the cost then - we did all the dyno work for free. It did take weeks though!
Carbs etc were extra.
I reckon it will need another look at soon - I would rebuild every 5 years or so if DIY.

I wish the OP would return, there have been some good replies here, but he basically has said "Hi guys, found something in a shed, no info, what's it worth?".
To show how wildly things like this can go, I got my E Type for...
£3600 - Only five years ago, yet by the same token, Lowdrag is also right.
We need more info.
I will say that if it is a 2+2 I have a full set of seats (front and rear) and a few other bits you can have for £100 all in.

I paid only £800 for my E type all those years ago. I wouldn't like to comment on what I've spent on it since thoughyikesweeping

And that's before you'd had it rebuilt!

Ahhh, you sound like me, but on a much grander scale, don't think of the costs...
