I posted this in General Gassing but haven't had much (any!) response. Does anyone know if it's possible to fit a childs car seat to the rear bench seat of an MGBGT?

Any info. gratefully received!

I know it's been done but I've never been able to find a seat short enough to fit, though some come close if you remove the bottom of the seat but nothing has felt very secure.

biggrin How times change, when my first son was a baby we had an MGCGT, and an Irish setter, we used to put James's (son) carry cot sideways wedged behind the seats and Kimber (dog) could just about squeeze in the back! Admittedly as James grew Kimber could no longer fit but ho humm... it seemed to work. We'd probably get a visit from the social services these days! hehe

My daughter is expecting her first child in August and she sends me the weekly info updates. On the latest one they inspect the car before you leave the hospital to see that you have the appropriate baby seat with the correct CE markings. If not you have to stay at the hospital with the baby until you turn up with one. Big Brother is surely here, not like in my day.

James left the hospital in a 2CV that I had borrowed from a colleague because my new company car was on delivery. My first ever company car was a pea-green Chevette and knowing that our son was on the way I ordered something ultra-practical to replace it... a Capri GT! That and the MGCGT did us for 2 or 3 years until Charlie was born then I succumbed and replaced the Capri with a Cavalier SRi and the MG with a Porsche 924 Turbo, loads of room in that - it even had two sculpted seats for the boys in the back!

When my mum went into labour with me on a cold January night, Dad drove us all to the hospital in one just like this:-

I'd think I was just held in mum's arms on the way home eek

What are you planning to do and how old is the child? Are you doing it for safety or legality?

If they are 3 or over and the car has no seatbelts, (didn't have them fitted when new) then the child can go in the back without restraint.

If you fit seat belts, you then have to fit them for everyone, (ie 4 / 5).

I know this as my dad has just gone through the process involving his 3 year old son and an Austin Cambridge which has no seatbelts.

I wouldnt even think about putting my kids in my classic cars unrestrained.
I have used www.quickfitsbs.com to install proper 3 point seat belts into both the classics that I carry my young ones around in.
My colleague is just speaking to quickfit about fitting rear belts into his newly purchased B GT. Not cheap, but you do have precious cargo!!

thanks Moose, and RichB - I might give quickfit a call - safety is my primary consideration but ideally I'd like ot be legal too smile
