Hello,

I have an 1930's SS1 radiator shell (actually belongs to my Dad), and I would like to know how much it is worth. Structurally it is very good, but it needs re-chroming and doesn't have many of its slats left. The mazac (or whatever material it is) emblem is damaged with one of the wings missing.

Any comments or advice on value and where to sell it would be welcome!

Cheers,

redchina

i honestly dont mean to be cheeky...

but this is worth only as much as someone is willing to pay for it.
put it on Ebay and if it sells for $10 then at least it is going to make someone's pride and joy that little bit nicer.

if it sells for $100 even better.

That applies to everything...and the trouble with Ebay is: if nobody who needs an SS1 grille sees the add, I could end up with £10, whereas if someone sees it who really needs it I could end up with £1000. And what would be the reserve be? I'd rather advertise it in a club magazine with a price, hence the question.

Cheers.

I would suggest an advert on 'jagads' which includes the Jaguar Enthusiast Club, or you could try ebay as suggested.

If it were mine i would certainly put it on ebay with a decent reserve and be sure to post your listing worldwide. Also be prepared to pack it and post it (easier than you think) therefore ensuring you are getting the widest possible coverage of buyers.

Excellent information - thank you. I also thought of advertising through the VSCC, or maybe JEC and JDC. I suppose I could just put 'offers' in the advert? One of the technical guys at the JEC said he thought it was worth around £1000 (this was several years ago). When I took it to the Jag spares day at Stoneleigh a few year back (to get a quote for re-chroming) I was amazed to find that it caused a lot of interest just by carrying it from my car to the chroming man's stall. The people who asked me about it seemed to think it was exremely rare, and couldnt believe it was going to be stuck on a garage wall as on ornament. Unfortunately at the time I had no interest in selling it!

Cheers,

There are some very well informed Jaguar people in Pistonheads, Lowdrag, RW744 etc. - search for the 1952 Droop-Snoot C Type thread and the Mike Hawthorn threads and you will find them. I would then PM them with your question. They will no doubt be able to put you in touch with the pre-war Jag people. smile Rich...

p.s. Whatever you do don't eBay it - it will be of value to someone who is restoring one of these cars - you will not only make some money but also contribute to the restoration of an old very rare car. [/footnote]

The other place to look for "Pre-XK" Jaguar people would be www.jag-lovers.org Adverts aren't allowed in the forums but you may find people in the "Pre-XK" forum who are able to point you a the right direction.

There are several ways of attacking this problem; firstly you can contact the JDC representative for the pre-war cars and he is Denis Foxley who can be contacted at denis@foxley.freeserve.co.uk He will probably give you an answer straight away.

The world expert on pre war Jaguars is Wally Vorlaufer from Johannesburgh though, and he makes just about everything for these cars. I know, I visited his works a few years back and was most impressed with the quality of his spares including the big chrome on brass headlights. He makes radiators too so an email to him wouldn't go amiss but he'd need a photo to see the condition. vorcomp@netactive.co.za

Hope this helps.

Lowdrag, a8Hex, RichB,

Thaks very much for the advice, no doubt I'll get the information I need from your contacts. Ideally I would like to sell it for a reasonable figure to someone who is restoring a car, not necessarily the maximum amount possible. It would be good to know what ballpark we are talking about though.

Thanks again for the advice and suggestions.

Cheers,
