Morning all,

Have bought a classic barge for work [an e28] and looking to insure it cheaply on a classic policy. I would welcome recommendations where to look. Is there a classic equivalent of confused.com?

Would be doing 8-10k a year and will be selling it once autumn turns as i have no garage, so a limited mileage policy would be ideal.

cheers in advance smile

Try Hagerty.

Great service and miles cheaper than anyone else I've tried for classic insurance.

I use Heritage, been very good for me. Includes "club" trackday use.

I'm down for a max of 3K a year, they added business use for nothing on that.

Hegarty quoted £200 for 5K miles in my M635 CSi with an agreed value of £15K.

They were an absolute pleasure to deal with throughout - very refreshing!

Not sure if they offer a higher mileage option though.

Not having much luck so far, though am waiting on a call from Aon. Hagerty can't quote as I need the car for work, but they did put me in touch with another firm who are also calling back this aft.

The strange thing is that noone has been able to touch the price given by an online calculator such as tiger or confused.com. This strikes me as strange as I thought a classic policy, limited miles, and using a specialist broker would add up to a useful saving.

Best price so far is £545 fully comp from Lancaster. 28yrs old, 3yrs NCB, 3 points from October '05 and a fault claim from Nov. '04.

The claim and points are the issue, but its double what I pay on my current car.

PS - car is a 528i, but the price for fully comp. on a 525i SE is over £100 less! for 27bhp!

ker-ist. should've got a M535i to really make it worth it......

Have you tried Footman James, they were by far and away the cheapest when it came to my Ginetta.

the issue is classic car insurance is based on the motor being a second car. you will need to insure a daily driver as a normal car. At least to get the savings.

I didn't think of that tbh.

Just spoke to a chap called Gary at 'Need To Insure' - 01623 720 081. this was the company Hegarty told me about. Very helpful and explained things rather than putting me on hold.

I can get a 6k p.a. policy for £301 [£100 excess] but this rised to £600 [£200 excess] for 8k miles. Both are fully comp.

I intend to run the car through summer before putting a full year's MOT on it and selling on around October time. I bought the car for this exact purpose as I should easily get my money back with the condition its in.

With this in mind, is it ok to go for the 6000 mile limit with the intention of using that inside the 6mths I'll own it, then cancel the policy when I sell? Is this 'dodgy' practice? I have 3yrs NCB which is enough for me not to worry about accruing another year.

i would also recommend Footman James.
They have sorted me a policy on my mr2 turbo for a mere £160 fully comp!
That's with really low excess as well, and i'm quite young with no NCB.
I also don't insure any other car myself.....!

Give them a ring, you should come up trumps!

Your problem is that you are using it as your main car. It may be as cheap or cheaper to get ordinary insurance. Classic policies are usually very cheap because the car is a cared-for weekend car, using it as an everyday drive bumps up the risk a lot.

AON is now Footman. Been with AON since taking over the policy from my Father 6 years ago..no problems in that time...but that Hagerty quote looks interesting..!

Aon is NOT Footman james.
Beware of so called `market and agreed values`, what the insurance companies deem market value is applicable to everything including agreed values, which make a mockery of your insurance.
Example, if you spend 40k on a car worth 25 ( and clients do) , in the event of a total loss you will only recieve the market value as deemed by the engineer and that will be much less than you think. Even less than your agreed value in many instances.
Aon insure some of the biggest collections in the world. So if you spend in excess of the M/V on your vehicle , provided you can prove your expenditure with bills and a separate letter from your repairer ,it will be correctly valued and insured. It may cost more, but as I have a running battle at present with a well known insurer on exactly the first point, I would suggest the Aon alternative as I do now with all my clients.
It is not about initial costs and deals, which you all seem to concentrate on.
It is about full cover, giving you peace of mind. Try replacing 40k worth of work, The whole idea of running the classic is improve it all the time. These improvements bear nothing against the market value.

yes

You'd have to add a zero on the end of my Hagerty premium to get many of the quotes I was given for the TVR. Unbelievably good value. That said, I'm a young-ish driver in quite a high risk area, the benefits might not by quite so high elsewhere.

Try Richardson Hosken. They have always served me well on classic policies, and allow numerous named drivers and changes without extra cost.

It's been a while since I had my own insurance, but am I right thinking that I won't need to worry about not having a proper no claims bonus as I've been driving a company car for the last 8 years? I want to insure my 1979 RS2000 initially while I do some work ( as I'm worried it will be noticed if I have to pull it out of the garage for the first time in years), then hopefully use it a bit once I've got it through the MOT. I thought I'd get a 1,500 miles a year policy if such a thing is still available.

First post so be gentle with me!
