Colin McRae's 6R4 is currently up for sale on ebay, and seeing it was just up the road from me, I decided to pay it a visit.

The guy who owns it now is a top bloke, and is very enthusiastic about the car, unfortunately he had a BAD accident in a Range Rover, and now has a metal rod through his arm. The 6R4 is too aggressive to live with on the stages now because of his arm, so he now is looking for an Impreza WRC.

This car was built for McRae by TAL engineering, the work that has gone into it is phenomenal to say the least. The 6R4 is McRae's favourite Group B rally car, and he commisioned the build of this car, to exactly how he wanted it. McRae sold the car, to one of his friends, and David the guy that owns it now, bought it off McRae's friend a couple of months before he died. It's now finished in a Pearl White, and has the same livery as it appeared in the Donegal Rally, which was the last time McRae drove this car.

I had a really good look around the car, and it is stunning, and in a way humbling to be in it's presence. Here's some pictures, enjoy.

I have a very large soft spot for 6R4s, if only I had the folding! Actually this is the second time this month, that this car has popped up on my radar. The web site Rally Buzz had a promotional video of Colin in action in this car, have a look at the video in this link.

Lot 233

Registration Number: P18 WRC Chassis Number: PRO-WRC-97-001
With the introduction of World Rally Car regulations that widened the scope of permissible modifications in the Group A category, the Impreza World Rally Car was born. The special feature of this machine was a body fitted with a blister fender that only barely squeezed into the regulations governing the body of two-door vehicles. However, the most drastic changes were not to the body but in the area around the engine. The engine camshaft, cylinder port and combustion chamber were refined and the capacity of the intercooler was increased. Also, extensions were made to the exhaust manifold. These changes represented a significant improvement over the previous machine. In fact, this car represented a complete change in performance, almost to the extent that it had moved out of the Group A class. Subaru, using their appointed Rally Team based in Banbury, England, were the first team to design and build a brand new car to suit the new regulations that have now spanned over ten years of the World Rally Championship. The first ever WRC Subaru built was Chassis no PRO/WRC/97.001.

It was the first car had been shown to the worlds media, just hours before the 1995 World Champion, the Late Colin McRae, along with Italian team mate Piero Liatti would debut the car on the 1997 Monte Carlo Rally. Behind the scenes, Prodrive had been extensively testing the car in the French alps with McRae behind the wheel. As the car was completely new, they needed to gather as much information as possible and the car that they were using for this PRO/WRC/97.001. McRae was also going to be partnered with a new co -driver for 1997, Nicky Grist. Grist could not make all the testing and Northern Ireland Co Driver Chris Patterson was called in. He recounts the story of testing the car to its limits and on one occasion just over the limit when high in the French Alps, he and McRae rounded a sixth gear bend at over 100mph and spun a number of times into a field! With no damage done, McRae simply selected 1st gear and got on with the job. Every night, all the Data from PRO/WRC/97.001 days testing was sent back to Prodrive‘s Banbury base where, what had been learnt during the day, was applied to the 2 brand new cars being built for Rally Monte Carlo. It worked and Italian Piero Liatti won the event, This was the first of 8 victories for the 1997 Subaru World Rally Car and it was enough to see Subaru seal the manufacturers Title with Colin McRae missing out on the drivers title by just one point. The 2 door bodyshell, wide-arched shape, was used successfully up until 2000 and became an Global Icon for all motorsport fans and car enthusiasts. The very first of these cars was PRO/WRC/97.001 originally registered P555 WRC and when the car was sold on to a customer team it was re registered P18 WRC.

After a successful career in many national and international championships, PRO/WRC/97.001 has now been completely rebuilt mechanically by Mckinstry Motorsport in Ireland and a bare metal paint restoration returning the car to it original livery. PRO/WRC/97.001 is first of the breed and as such holds an important place within the history of international motorsport especially given Subaru‘s recently announced and much lamented departure from international rallying.

Estimate: £70000 - £85000

I'm sure its nice for a die hard McRae fan to own one of his Subaru's but it just doesn't do anything for me!

Notice that Colin's car features a two-piece polycarbonate/GRP mid-screen rather than the original single piece perspex.
The tooling for the originals is long gone and to remake the tooling would be prohibitively expensive, so the car features the replacement developed and manufactured by PHer KingK who campaigned a 6R4 and even had the impossible to get front and rear uprights re-cast!
