Hi,
1st post on here for ages. Would just like some opinions.
I have been waiting to view a nice classic for a good few months. Finally got to see it New Years Day. Condition not quite as great as I had hoped but still loads of potential and quite unique as it is modified. I spoke to the seller to see if there is any movement on the price, he is standing firm, saying price is fixed at 2k.
Had he dropped it to 1.75k I would have done the deal.
I do have the money to go to 2k but I just think it is not quite worth it.
Problem is, now I just feel gutted . Am I cutting off my nose to spite my face or should I hold out and see wha happens?

I'm the reverse, can't resist a deal if my heart is set on it. It has probably cost me a few bob but I've got the cars I want. I'd go for it but it does depend on how rare your potential purchase is and how well the modifications have been carried out. Strangely I'm the reverse with other things, non stop haggle, it embarrasses my wife.

I'm the same. Good at negotiating everything except cars. I'd have fallen in love and paid the money no questions. However, I reckon now that a week has almost passed its worth reminding him of your offer as he is probably thinking the same thing about whether it was worth losing over a few hundred. You may be surprised, or you may meet in the middle?

the only time I paid more than I wanted, I bought a pudding.

If you are prepared to pay over your budget, then your heart is ruling and you are also ignoring some obvious fault.

Not worth it to you or not worth it in resale value?

I don't mind paying a bit over the odds for something if I really want it. Probably why I never have any money hehe

Ask yourself if pride is more important than happiness. Would it be the end of the world for example if you lost your wallet with £250 in it? I doubt it. I spent a month "negotiating" over the purchase of my car six years back and ended up paying more than I wanted to but that has disappeared into the mist and only the warm glow of ownership and the fun I've had with it remain. Remember that the problem with the ostrich wasn't that it got kicked in the ass but that it couldn't see that it had done it to itself!

As one aspect of it is already "not quite as great as I had hoped" I would let it go.
If it was everything that you had expected, for that £250 extra I would have gone for it.

I had an interesting situation recently; I saw a 'classic' that interested me, the owner (in the motor trade)
didn't have any need for it but declined to sell it because he felt that in this financial climate he wouldn't get what he wanted for it.
He didn't need to sell but there will be a number out there who will have to.
I'm sad to say that I think there will be many many bargain opportunities in the months/years to come.

Thanks for the opinions guys.
Weird one this because the car is pretty rare and has pretty much all the boxes ticked. It is just that there is a few hundred quid of bodywork to make into the sort of example that definitely warrants the £2k price tag. I think the seller is in a good position, doesn't NEED to sell, has a very interested party with the money (me), and has a rare car. He may as well stick to his guns, I have virtually no bargaining power.
I'll give it a few weeks, knowing that he is not advertising it elsewhere, and see where we are.

Personally I think your mad. Let say you leave it 4 weeks you split the difference and he accepts £100 less, thats only £25 per week you saved.

Just go and buy it now, that £200 will be long forgotten after a few happy miles behind the wheel.

Not sure that's worth £2k to be honest... pretty much all the Dollys / Tollys out there are undervalued and there are some bargains to be had.

As an update -
I DID hold firm, waited for the seller to compromise and agreed the deal at the lower price yesterday!
