If the car is yours then being a named driver could lead to the insurers not paying out. They are only too aware of this scam and investigate every time. I suggest you look through the back of the classic magazine and contact the brokers who advertise.

ask the owners clubs if they can get deals for you. lots of classic policies have a minimum age of 21. I know the MGOC can often insure you younger than that though.

Would you happen to know if there are any limitations as to what sort of classic he could get insured on? Reason I ask is that i turned 21 a while ago and am now thinking about purchasing myself a "classic" and am unaware, basically, of what i would be able to insure. Anyone got any ideas?
(sorry about the thread hijack)

If you go for the Capri, pick up a copy of Retro Ford or Classic Ford and flick through the insurers in those, most can accomodate something for the young driver. One of our young female members manged to insure her 3.0S Capri evn though she was only 19 at the time................. but it did cost her around 2k!! lol

I'm 19 and I gave up with classic insurance, nobody would insure me because I was under 21. In the end I went with a regular insurer it was dirt cheap anyway, I later found out that the owners club for my car has a special deal with an insurance broker so they can provide us young 'uns with insurance. It might be worth choosing the car and checking out the owners clubs to see if they can help.

It's been 5 years since I had a classic policy now, so things may have changed a bit, but, the age thing was because, generally for classic policyies, there is a milage limitation and you need to have access to another car as a daily driver.

I would also be very careful about insuring a 'calssic' on a standard policy, as general insurers will adhere to the market value as the book price not an agreed value as defined or valued by an owners club etc.
I've seen a few people loose a lot because of this.

Footman james insure me at 19, you have to ring them though as the site won't quote for under 20-somethings. Paid £600 fully comp with 0ncb and euro breakdown on my 65 beetle but that was mainly because my mum was a named driver with an accident and 2 convictions.

If you go for a Spitfire and join the TSSC (http://www.tssc.org.uk) you should be able to get cover with one of the club's insurance panel - and the club management seem to be happy to help kick up a fuss if you have any issues (http://www.tssc.org.uk/index.php?option=com_fireboard&Itemid=55&func=view&id=8452&catid=56).

It was the ability to get insurance on a Spitfire through the TSSC that had a spitfire parked in my (parents) garage aged 19 (geez - 16 years ago!).

OP and [...] to get insurance that best suits anything other than standard family cars driven by 25+ then you need to do research via the net and magazines but also ringing thenm will be necessary

Different insurers, brokers and policies will give you different things - some people accept policies that mean their classics can't be out during the hours of darkness rolleyes and with my Capri I discovered that Third Party ONLY (not TPF&T) still exists !

For info Firebond has been taken over and Footman James deal with their business

You could also consider an MG Midget/AH Sprite thumbup
