Fun Daily Driver Needed
Discussion
Evening all,
I'm starting to look for a car to get to and from work in. But this time a Classic, and definitely RWD!
I bought an Impreza estate back in March for 900 notes, its given me 16000 faultless miles, for little more than a
set of brake pads and a tax disc.
At the time I was working in a workshop, on the bench as a joiner. I have since bought the business I was working for
and have had to buy a van for all the deliveries, so have been driving the van to and from work day to day.
I'm a bit bored of that now, and have kept on paying the Impreza insurance due to a couple of problems with the van.
My route to work is 22 miles, with a 60/40 split in favour of B roads
So I'm thinking that a classic to get me too and from work would be cheaper on insurance, and hopefully cost little
to run outside of normal servicing. Leaving the van at work just for delivering and the odd job on site.
Things I'd like in the car are:
No more than £1500, nearer £1000 would be better
Easy to work on, I'm planning to do all of the work myself
Not too heavy on electrics
Fairly quick, 120bhp+
RWD
2 door
hard top
Thoughts so far are: MGB GT, Tuned Sunbeam and thats about it
I haven't been looking too much yet, but i'm interested in your opinions as its a very strong posibility
Thanks
Matt

Old Golf GTI would make sense.
They come in RWD now do they? a mate found the gearbox tended to go bang if you drove them RWD too much though
Capri then

A MGB GT for a grand is going to be heap....to run outside of normal servicing. Leaving the van at work just for delivering and the odd job on site.

And IF you can find a decent Sunbeam, you'll be spending all your time searching for parts rather than running your business.
I think you need to rethink some of your criteria and start being a bit realistic.
How about up to 52 mpg and 0-60 in 8sec ? RWD convertible hard top? Look at a suzuki cappuccino. If you picked one up for 1500 quid you may need to look at some rust problems, but it can be cured. I avg 45 mpg and love B roads because it sticks like poo to a stick. No carbs to balance. Independant double wish bone and discs all round. Hydraulic lash adjusters so no valve clearance check (3cyl 12v). Water cooled turbo. Water cooled oil cooler. Tyres are only 40 quid per corner. I'm 27 and it costs me about £300 to insure (group 13).
