What can i ge for £800 then??

My Imp project has gone downhill a bit, and it's too much work for me now frown

Still going classic though, but what to get?

Want something as good as i can get! Was thinking along the lines of a chevette, mini, Imp, beetle etc..

Mini and Beetle a good onewe're going into 1000's so i think that's out?

Please can someone help?

Look for a Triumph Herald. If you look hard, you can find a few runners with MOT's for around your budget.

I want as little work as possible.

And only £800 not over really, and small engine size 1.5 MAX! it's my first car so can't justify big insurance.

Not very up to date with these, will start doing some research. I know it's not going to be break neck speeds, but whats the performance like? Spares accesible? Easily modified?

Any Links to any classic for sale is appreciated biggrin

Cheers guys smile

never had a dolly myself [YET!] but i was seriously looking last summer before succumbing to the fact that with no garage/drive and driving 20k miles a year it wouldn't be the best of ideas!

OP - if you do find yourself interested in a dolly, its maybe worth ringing the specialist insurers and finding out the difference in policy cost between a 1500 and a 1850/sprint. the triumph forums have quite a few guys in their teens running sprints who aren't getting stung for insurance.

i was after a sprint but saw a lot of rough ones. as i was wanting to improve/upgrade i was advised it might be better to use an 1850 as they tend not to have been abused and a mint one is much cheaper. 1500tc's seemed abundant under a grand.

i would say to go for a triumph 1300 as i love the 60's round headlight styling and they are cheap as chips, but are FWD so i won't. the most georgeous car i saw on my hunt was a 1300 with RWD conversion and sprint running gear smile

anyway, i've been extra efficient at work this morning so might find myself trawling ebay for classics later, will post if i see anything suitable.

I've always found that a best cheap classics always seem to be odd balls and things that most people don't consider as classic.

What about a Fiat 127, Uno Turbo, X1/9, Cinq Sporting, MG Metro, Citroen Visa, or Renault 5. If you are prepared to search all the mags, internet sites and travel to view something, you could find something that is very rare and individual.

Have considered all of the aboveapart from the Visa.

Fiat 127 - Harder to get a hld of a decent one
Uno Turbo - Mention turbo to the insurance, and i'm not going to get insured!
X19 - hehe if i can get one that's nt go any roton it for £800 i'm lucky.
Cinq Sporting - It's up there at the mo, too modern for me though.
Mg Metro Seriously interested in one of these, can et ahold of mini engine's dead easy too, along with performace parts smile
Visa - A bit ugly for me wink
R5 - Nice, but original unmodded one's are scarce, i'd love a R5 Dimma Turbo though, cloud9

Cheers for your suggestions though dude smile Every little helps.

Top of my list by a country mile at the mo' is a MK1 fiesta!
In second a Chevette saloon.... Third MK2 Fiesta.... Fourth, i'm back to an Imp

There's a Visa Cabriolet that has been appearing on fleabay recently, several times so it obviously hasn't sold!

The car is local to me, I spotted it on the M4 recently (recognised the registration) looks quite servicable and I must admit being quite partial to 'odd lots' like this. A full 4 door cabrio is unusual in iteself I think!

odball classics or maybe simply not classics. the x/19 is, the 127 one of the oddball ones but only if its a sport or abarth. the rest are simply crap cars.

uno? cinquecento? a fecking metro?FFS

OP, not had any ebay browsing time yet, but have you seen this thread:

http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&a...

and the one linked in the first post. note the OP from this thread only wants a grand for his early mx-5..........

Try www.metropower.co.uk if your interested in metros'. They make good little project cars and go pretty cheap, just don't get one thats a rust bucket. My mates got one, and theres loads of performance mods you can make to them that don't really cost much.

Possibly a TVR Wedge, May be able to get one around that for one that may need some interior work. No rust problems apart from Chassis but most will have been maintained, I know you mention Insurance but I found going bigger cheaper.
When I was 22 I went from an Astra 1.6 nearly 8 years old costing me £1100 a year to a brand new 3.0 V6 SE Pug Coupe costing plus 26K and my insurance dropped to £600 a year even though a group 19. I then bought a TVR S as a second car, I've just fitted a Cosworth engine and the insurance was £164 for the year.

Personally, I'd go for a DAF 33 or 66.

Tiny engine and very quirky looks. The 66 is a Michelotti masterpiece in my eyes.

£800 would buy you a very nice one.

However, finding one might be a problem.

Forget anything too big.

Other consideration has to be a Moggy, dirt cheap, cheap spares, very easy to work on.
