I do not wish this to become an advert and upset the mods - it is purely advice I am after not enquiries....

Seems pertinent to start with this forum.

Where or how would it be most effective for me to dispose of a vast collection of both mainstream and specialist classic car mags spanning the 1970s - 1990s? I would appreciate any advice or experiences.

1. eBay - I would lose the will to live if I individually offered each one and included P & P - I imagine it could become a full-time occupation? However I do believe it would provide the best financial return.

So, if I were to bundle them by the dozen/title/years and make it collection only, I understand I would geographically limit buyers and probably my return?

2. Car Boot - not specialist enough? Also a logistical nightmare collating and displaying 100's of mags. Impromptu library for bored males? Pages become dog-eared and reek of burger?

3. Autojumble - Punters are essentially looking for parts not mags? Impromptu library for enthusiats? Pages become dog-eared and reek of oil?

4. Other option, that I am not aware of or thought of?

Thanks,

Ebay was very good when I sold my collection including three years of Motoring News from 1959-63. Put them on at £4.99 and sold them for £375 plus carriage to an enthusiast in Autralia!
Motor Sport, Classic and Thoroughbred, Practical Classics -- they all sold and I was left with nothing but cash.
Bundle into years with a few good photographs.

You could book a stand at the Beaulieu International Autojumble:

But does anyone have any experience of Autojumbles re mag disposal and what's the cost of a pitch. I presume that at this late stage I would have a pitch on the periphery of what is a vast event? Or is it first-come-first-pitched?

Any Autojumble advice/experience?

Edit - Just seen Trunk Trader pitch on Sunday at £55 - sounds a better bet than £112 upwards for the 2-day pitch. Anyone done this?

Thanks,

Yes, have set up a stall at an autojumble to do that. Lots of people chatting about they too have huge collections of magazines in their loft! Sold about 20 and covered the cost of a burger. Not worth it.

eBay is just too time consuming. When it first started in the Uk there were killings to be made but the chavs have got in there now and prices have dropped so far it just isn't worth it.

Sounds horrid but just bin them :-(

Pete' I've given away magazines on our stand at the NEC international classic cars show for a few ywars now

When I say "given", signs and collection jars are left with the magazines asking for a 50p donation for each which goes to the children's charities our club is raising money for ( www.sportingbears.org.uk )

I'm not sure if I want to do it again as I pinched the idea off another stand and another few have copied us (so no I don't want yours thanks)

Not everyone gives the full donation, or any donation, despite walking away with an arm's full

I get many offers of more magazines and whole collections and people looking for one or two particular isses only

The magazines that go (in small numbers at a time) are usually the general classic car magazines usually no more than a few years old altho' a small number of specialist magazines (e.g. Tractor World) will always go too

My conclusion for you (at last you say) contact a few local magazine traders (those that go to the big shows) and ask if they're interested in any you've got and the rest recycle at your local tip

Many thanks to the last two posters for their feedback - must say my initial enthusiasm has now waned somewhat and the loft of the new property looks a more likely destination.

Reminds me, I purposely left behind half-a-ton of aeronautical engineering mags in my last loft.... wonder if the new owners appreciated them?

I will however definitely need to thin the collection - I have a dental appointment next month, think I'll fill up the sack truck and deposit a couple of hundred in reception... make a pleasant change from Country Life.
