I just can't imagine why . . . the Maserati's have different bodies and look so much sexier . . . What is it I don't see.

78.000 €uro for what seems to be a top of the range Masser car.

Gorgeous, arent they. And with the same pedigree of Astons...

No idea why these are not worth the same as 60s Astons. Maybe the 80s Maseratis tarnished the imnage too much?

I don't know how many Maseratis were made, but I thought they'd made more than Aston had. Also James Bond didn't drive an Maserati.

The Maserati vfm bonus seems to be across the board, not just at the Sebring/DB5 end : The 2 best Meraks in the world or an average Dino? How many Ghibli spyders to a Daytona spyder?
Gives one hope that a Maserati could almost be in reach.....now I`d be very grateful if everyone would continue to have concerns about the Citroen period and suppress values of Khamsins please.

James Bond drove Bentleys in the books.

quite,
But more people know him from the Movies so they want a DB5. The wonders of product placement. When I looked at buying an Aston I had a look at some DB6s, one of the dealers I talked to who had some nice DB6s and DB5s, I was looking at a 6 and the wife started looking at a 5, she asked what the difference between a 5 and 6 was, the dealer said "at the moment about £100grand". I don't think that's what she meant, but it certainly answered her question.

Well I certainly couldn't afford a DB5!

No actually I met and fell in love with a little XK150.

One of my all time favorites- best would have to be an XK150 DHC in bright red with a cream interior on wires with the best engine I could find- one of the best cars ever!

On topic, I think the fact that the classic Massers aren't as widely recognised might be the reason that they aren't 'worth as much' as the equivalent Aston- I'm sure that a percentage of classic Aston's are bought purely for the Bond connection of a little boy seeing the films in the 60's and now having the money to fulfill that dream of having the Bond car. Why else would it be that a huge number of DB5's have been resprayed in Silver Birch over the years?

Pretty weird arguements:

"Also James Bond didn't drive an Maserati."
And if he did? Do you mean the Aston became an icon and fetches big money because of?

" . . .2 best Meraks in the world or an average Dino? How many Ghibli spyders to a Daytona spyder?"
Octane compared a year or so ago . . . horses for courses. A Merak IMO is a nice 70s Italian while the Dino is a period top 10 entry.

:cough:

The 3500GT compared to the DB4/5 Aston: both period GT's with 220+ brake straight sixes. Both stylish and gorgeously - Italian (Superleggera body was designed by Carrozzeria Touring in Milan, just as the 3500GTs) - bodied. Aston performs a little better, more Maserati's were made:

What Wikipedia says about the 3500GT: All together, 242 Vignale convertibles and nearly 2000 coupes were manufactured . . .
What Wikipedia says about the DB4: In total, 70 DB4 convertibles were made from a total DB4 production run of 1110 cars . . .

Re: "No actually I met and fell in love with a little XK150."
Excellent choice, not a 4 persons carrier though . . . and a few years older compared to the Maserati.

What stands that I find it odd normally Italian cars fetch more than their Brit equivalents.

A few late 50s / early 60s Maserati snaps:

Porn.

Bond would fit perfectly in here.

Great colour.

Vert at speed.

Rally start.

Even in boring grey it's a looker.

Nice.

They sound the bits too . . .

Yes, I think that part of Astons' values are down to the "Bond" effect. Hence the differences in value between the DB4, 5 & 6. OK, many people would argue the DB5 is better looking than the 6, but against a DB4?

Well the FHC has back seats, and my boys fitted them at the time we bought the car, we'd hoped they would fit in the back longer than they have done... I'll have to stop waters the little buggers and see if they stop growing!
The DB6 has loads more room in the back, not so sure about the DB5, which I couldn't have afforded. On the other hand if I'd bought a DB6 then (2.5 years ago) it would have over doubled in value since, if it hadn't bankrupted me in the process.

A bit late - my 1972 Mexico.

I guess the individual Maserati models don't have such a strong identity as the Astons, whether this explains the price difference I don't know.

Also they are expensive to restore (compared to say a Jaguar) and the finished value is not high.

I bought her about 2.5 years ago.
She's an earlyish car, February 58, so has the earlier rear lights and over riders, the traficators on the centre of the dash rather than on the steering column and the heater control under the bonnet. As opposed to a March 58 car where you get an in cabin temperature control and column mounted indicators.

Being an early one, she's a 3.4 with B-Type heads. Not quite matching numbers, the head was changed sometime way back when and lost in antiquity, but the rest is as matching. No idea how many miles total, I've got a pretty thorough history for her since 79, when the clock was showing about 11K miles (no way was this right) and over the next 26 years she'd only done about 12K, in a couple of years I guess she'd only been driven for an MOT and back, I've been using her more than previous owners.

She's mostly original looking, I've fitted a pair of HD8s in place of the standard HD6s. The carpets have been replaced as some point. The woman from the leather conservation trust thought the leather on the seats was probably original, I had them repair a couple of small splits and treat the leather work.

Last summer I had the misfortune to have the bonnet come open on the motorway. Which I understand is not an uncommon fault. I'm reading Norman Dewis' biography at the moment. He comments there he had one do it to him too. So I've just had the bonnet replaced with another original. The tin basher took my old one in exchange and will straighten it in due course for the next 150 owner that has this problem. Anyone I've only just got her back on the road. She's still not finished, not that any classic ever is. I had the rear bumper re-chromed and when we unwrapped it, it was found to have some blemishes in the chromework, so she'd got no back bumper at the moment.

Anything else you like to know?

Nice badge.

A Vert teamed up with another 'not so valuable' Italian:

A Tjaarda Rari 250 GTE.

And the Aston:

Of course they look nice but IMO they so lack the elegance the 3500GTs have.

Succesfull Anglo/Italo match.

I love 'em when they come in awkward colours.

And of course they do have a racing pedigree:

I like this one a series 3 DB4, only the DB4GT is better looking Aston.
(not counting the 50s race cars obviously)
I'll even forgive for obscuring the view of the XK120 OTS behind.

Less common to find a racing DB6, the earlier lighter cars were generally more competitive.

Those are some great pictures BTW.
(even if you missed the Jags hehe)

A sweeping statement that as you probably know is only true for the first three novels, in Goldfinger he decided on an Aston Martin DB MkIII when offered a choice of the Aston or a Mk2 Jag by Q Branch.

I'm sure I remember reading a discussion on this on PH years ago. Probably over in the Aston forum, when I used to hang out there. Or it might have been on the AMOC website forums.

Wasn't the car actually in the Goldfinger book referred to as a DB3?
The DB3 was a race car.

Also wasn't Goldfinger published in March 59 and the Mk2 was launched at Earls Court in October?

Fleming actually called it a DBIII, which is confusing. A DB3 is an out-and-out race car. At the time, they did make a road car which was the third incarnation of the Db2/4, called the DB2/4 MkIII. This was after his bentley got written off in (I think) Moonraker, ending up in a garage in Maidstone

In the film they used an updated version, a Db5. Althoguh they actually used the prototype, so it was actually a DB4, suitably modified.
