I know this has probably been asked a 1000 times before, but here goes- if I was to spend say £25k on a classic in America what would I expect to pay to good old Gordon Brown when I get it home?

You may be able to get the 17.5% reduced if you can convince the govt. that the car has significany artistic or historical value...

Or if it was originally sold in Europe and previously exported. If so, VAT would have been paid when it was new.

BTI, (reduced car tax) is not really available any more.

Sooo, going from what we get charged..

Import duty is 10% of purchase price
V.A.T. is 17.5 %, now the devious buggers work it like this to get total.

Car price + Shipping + Loading & Handling costs = +10% import duty + 17.5% v.a.t. on the whole lot.

The "price of the car" is where there can be some flexibility, last one we did cost £3.5k all in. car value $20k
