I'm interested to hear opinion as to which of these iconic '80's homologation specials would be the better keeper, factoring in fun, collectability, residuals, driving satifaction etc.
They each have their respective strengths & weaknesses but if we supposed that you were to spend £12-13K on an example of each - which would you plumb for?

Both great cars as you say, of the two and with my own money I'd have the E30 M3 yes.

The Integrale will certainly make you smile, laugh even most days but somedays it will make you cry. Overall though it has a blood line that few can emulate. Get a good Evo 2 and it will retain money as long as you look after it.
I had a red EVo 1 and lost no money on it in 3yrs.

Also consider a 190E Cosworth Evo 1 again similar money [£13k] for good one and very rare only 502 total

Well, I've been fortunate to have had fun with a pukka ex-works Integrale EVO (the car Auriol won the '92 Monte in) and the road going version was (maybe still is) one of the truely great point to point road cars ever.
A good friend of mine had one of the Roberto Ravaglia ltd edition M3's when new, and I drove that on a few occasions. TBH I wasn't that impressed by it at the time, but, I think it was just because the car was just too good and lacked a bit of raw grin-factor excitement.

Which would I have....?

Heart would say Integrale, as, as has been said, it will may you grin and make you cry at the same time, but as a long term prospect, I suspect parts could become an issue before too long.
Head says M3, because of the rwd (for me that's a big plus factor) and long term ownership issues of costs, parts availabilty etc could be a better prospect with the M3.

Either way, you need to find the very best one you can afford.

As, a third option I would also consider one of the last 20v UR Quattro's...?

I'd go for the M3 but then I've got one for me the Integrale is always a temptation but I keeping shying away thanks to reliability questions. The Mercedes 190 Cossie is another good suggestion. Having driven the M3 is more exciting than the Merc but they are both excellent machines.

Got an Evo 1 which maybe a keeper. Not cheap to run (mechanically & petrol) but worth it & cheap to insure on a classic policy. Never driven an E30 but really fancy one at the moment, but would probably look to have both rather
than choose (hopefully). Guess it depends on personal preference.....

I have wanted an E30 M3 for as long as I can remember and all being well I may well be able to sort it out fairly soon, but, and it is a big but, I have a huge soft spot for the first of the 16V Grale's (pre Evo) and I still have my original sales brochure at home!

The E30 just beats the 'Grale into first place in my potential garage for the simple matter of being rwd. Running costs I doubt that there would be much in it between the two and neither is ever going to lose any value either.

Buy the one you fancy most and then in a year buy the other. Problem solved. wink

WOW......

I hate to say it.....but it would be a shame to drive it, almost needs putting in a museum for the ultimate future reference as to what a true brand new production Integrale looked like.

I suspect it was bought by an investor/collector and at 40k will likely only go to another one.

I'd go for an M3, but a close call.
I'd driven 911RS, Ferraris etc, and still remember the sense of anticipation as I finally got my hands on this famous road-going race car. Closely followed by the sense of disappointment when I fired it up and drove off - it felt just like any other 3-series, only coarser. However, get it on the right roads and it transforms into the legend you expected. The handling balance is staggering, utterly different from the 325 etc of similar vintage.

I haven't driven an Integrale, but hope to one day. Will it excite in the same way? Probably not, but then I grew up watching more DTM/BTCC than WRC.

I can't see anyone being disappointed with either choice

Probably cost less to keep the M3 on the road. They reckon on looking at 2.5 K a year to run an integrale due to chassis cracks and other 80s Italian terrors.

As apposed to the chassis cracks and generally shite corrosion protection on the E30?

great thread! It's the question I keep asking myself almost everyday... Classiccars had a good article
a few years ago.. (Integrale vs E30M3 vs Quattro vs Sierra Cosworth RS500)

look at this video, and choose your favorite only by comparing the "road holding"

http://208.65.153.251/watch?v=OiYL4D6qdbg

for me it's the M3

cheers Yves
