I love the E39 M5, it's a real useable modern uber saloon.

I dream of owning an E28 M5. Munich Legends have one for sale at the moment. I currently lack the funds needed to buy one, but by God do I lust after one. cloud9

my nearest BMW dealer just had this up for sale,

was a really nice example, debadged for extra stealth too

really like the E39's, but a good E34 is mightily tempting too IMO!

Not really yesterdays heroes is it though.

More of 'last weeks heavily diluted derivative of a once great model'

It's overrated and that car is over priced. Sorry to shatter any illusions here guys but it's simply not that good.

But you have a M535 which is pretty close.

To be honest my E28 520 caught my by surprise, I never thought it would be such a good drive. My missus can't understand why I rave about it so much.

You've got a lovely looking car, have you thought about putting some period BMW alloys on it to finish it off?

I do love my M535i, but a proper E28 M5 would be perfect.

I kind of like the whole cloth seats/steel wheels thing on the 520.

Its only done 64k miles, old boy had it for years, was only 470 quid back in April, just sailed through its MOT last weekend (did some prep mind, 700 squid)

I would like arm rests mind ad new rear speakers.

When I bought it I said to the missus if it did 25 to the gallon I'd keep it.

It does 31.

That's not bad going.

My M30 engined 525i used to get abysmal economy, though I think that was really down to the fuelling and size of the air intake as BMW deliberatley kept the power down to 150bhp (the M20 engined 325i of the same period had 170bhp).

On the motorway I get mid 30's fuel economy and around 21mpg around town, which is actually slightly better than my 525i!

My first E28 was a 520i, it's only redeeming feature was that it had a full leather interior. It was very very rusty!

Look in your rear view mirror: see those men in long, white overalls, yelling and waving (one of them brandishing a syringe?)

Pull over and let them reacquaint you with the padded joys of B wing.

One of the most perfectly proportioned saloon profiles of all time and it's ugly.

Lordi.

Andy, with respect, your love and ability behind the wheel of a Scooby is legend.

However, I have an R400 which renders the ricer as but the Lexus.

Do you find me carping on about the M5's relative lardiness in consequence?

No, you don't.

Why?

Because the E39 M5 remains (perhaps now just behind the new RS4) the finest compromise in practical, performance motoring yet devised.

You owned it a matter of weeks, I've had mine years: dozens of serial petrol feinds have borrowed, used and bought into the legend and that's because these things are akin to a fine wine, that slow burn effect.

The P1 and 22B are awesome, finely honed surgical instruments but far less accomplished ito a broad repertoire.

If an as new M5 is overpriced at £20-£25k (admittedly the very top end of the spectrum) I dread to think what the implication is for £50-60k Quattroportes.

My friend, enough already!

Has this example seems had its wheels refurbished?

They are a beautiful looking car, and without getting into the whole Bangle thing, one of the finest looking BMW's of recent years. I also love the design of the dash and interior, so ergonomic, well laid out and nice to look at.

I've not driven the M5 version, but many, many of the lessor models from the 520i right up to the 540i. I really liked all of them.

Looks like it, although to be fair the smoked effect is night on impossible for the average refurbmeister to achieve.

Fair play DeR. I shall retire my views on the E39 M5, as I believe they are now well documented and I'm the bloke at the back yelling "rubbish" who everyone wishes would go home wink

Besides - I haven't got a bottle of New Zealand's finest pinot noir in me this morning firing my fingers to keyboard so am feeling a little less argumentative. smile

Now, about that R400.... lick

The later cars had plain silver wheels, only the earlier cars had the smoke effect. smile
