There is some discussion on the Volvo forum at the moment about the legality of this, with some people suggesting that it's a no-no at MoT time. While I would quite agree that a dodgily-banded wheel is not a good thing, surely if it's been done to a high standard it's (a) just as safe as a wheel originally manufactured to those dimensions and (b) indistinguishable from such a wheel by the MoT examiner.

The last I heard about banded wheels was that they're illegal and punishable by three points per wheel, so a full set would see you banned, unless you were driving a Reliant Robin of course!

Does anyone know if there's any truth behind this?

IIRC a recent Practical Classics reckoned it is only legal if the work is done by someone with a certain level of qualification in welding.

That looks about right given what the website says..

  • "After careful consideration our wheels will be sent away and tested so that they are given a BS mark and are suitable for road and race applications.
This means that every set of wheels will come with a certificate to show that they are fully road legal."

Do you not think that the handling of classics on skinny rims and tyres is a big part of the attraction? James Hunt certainly did with the 3.5 inch rims and 145 (or was it 5.20) section tyres on his A35.
