No reason for this, but I just read that current speed cameras rely on the reflective yellow or white backgrounds of current number plates. So far over 1m motorists have been caught.
I wonder has anybody been flashed and received a Notice of Intended Prosecution, in a car with classic registration plates?

Don't know about speed cameras but the local tip (sorry, recycling centre) has had an ANPR camera installed recently.

Went down shortly afterwards and message board greeted me with "Good afternoon L 61 PYA, welcome to Poole Recycling Centre", which is why I noticed the ANPR camera.

Went down this afternoon in our '67 Mini (black & silver plates) and got totally ignored by the camera.

Of course not all ANPR cameras may be the same. Wonder if the ones at Tesco pick up the Mini's plates?

If the camera triggers something which it then cannot read, it is flagged up and a real person reads the numberplate. Hence numberplates in unusual script, etc can be read.

I went to an auction of Aston's and Aston paraphernalia at the Newport Pagnell factory a few weeks ago. Scattered throughout the car park was a large number of Astons with their rear number of plates wrapped in cling film. The plates were legible. I have heard of this being a possible anti camera device some years ago, but never actually seen any cars with their plates done up like this before.

Steve,

I've heard about the cling film thing but not seen it either. What I have seen is to put a length of square bar or tube (10mm) behind the top and bottom of the plate and then re-fix the plate to the car on the centre screws - that way the plate is deflected slightly in a concave way and the distortion affects the final picture.

There might be something in it. I missed a new camera on a regular run of mine (I have black and silver) front and back.

I got two flashes, my heart sank and I waited for the NIP.

And nothing.

Possibly, it could be the camera was out of film.

In terms of camera film, I would imagine the flash would be to illuminate the plate in bad light condition, in clear daylight though, it really would make no difference.
