J D Classics XK140 Roadster
Discussion
I have always fancied an XK Roadster so I went over to Essex to look at the JD showroom. It was awsome and the cars appeared immaculate BUT very very expensive. I was quoted £180K for one they had just updated. Yes it had a nice 5 speed gearbox, disc brakes, modern wiring loon, alternator and a modified original C type engine but still seems like crazy money to me.
Has anybody else bought one of these? What is it likely to fetch if I want to sell in 2 - 3 years time?

You can pay as much as you like for an XK. I looked at a fhc XK140 for about 25ish it needed stuff doing but was what I was after.
If you want the beautiful bells and whistles shiny perfect job, it will set you back mega bucks but 180k seems a bit steep to me. There is a good place in Bridgnorth Shropshire and a few others that you could try to get a comparison

If you intend to do significant miles and drive the car hard I do think the best way to get a pristine car that meets all your needs is to find a good straight car, a restorer that you trust, then carry out a retoration. You finish with something that you have specified and if your bothered about the money, it must make more sense that the price suggested. Also as time goes by you know what has been done and to what standard. There are a lot of low quality new parts out there that have a very short life. I did this with a big Healey about 10 years ago ( and 40K miles ) and am convinced it was the best route. Maybe I was lucky to find a good restorer/maintainer, he came from a recommendation from a good friend.
As a Jaguar owner of 30 years standing - various classic models - I had a thumb through the JDC magazine and there is a nice 120 drophead at £34,000. The XK140 drophead is always the dearest of the cars (except the 150S roadster of which only about a dozen were made) due to the style and the wooden dashboard. Frankly, if I was looking for a good XK, I'd join both the JEC and the JDC and ask their respective experts to help you find one. There might be one for sale just at that moment anyway. Buying via a club is a great idea since the garage margins are not factored in and most of the cars for sale are in very good running condition. I reckon you'll get a good example at one third of the JD price. The final problem at the moment is that the market place seems to be going like the late 80's and is crazy. One car I bought 14 years back for £42,000 is now, according to prices being asked, worth £150,000 and even the Lynx D type I bought in December for £60,000 I have been offered £100,000 for only last week. Crazy money. Best of luck in your search though.
