Barstewards... Take one legally parked car, taxed as required, tow it away and crush it the same day. One less reason to go to Camberwell...

A music producer is demanding compensation after a council towed away his rare £30,000 classic car - and crushed it.
The Bristol 411 was left legally in a council-run car park when Lambeth officials swooped. They towed it to a pound and destroyed it the same day.
Owner Mendoza Stewart said he was mystified as to why the car was targeted. He said: "The council said it was not taxed but as a 1972 classic car it is road-tax free and it was fully up to date. The tax disc was in the windscreen."
The aluminium-bodied vehicle was also in good condition after being restored.
Mr Stewart, who lives in Kennington, had parked it in a space beside his son's flat in Camberwell when it went missing.
"I was horrified - I thought it had been stolen and went to the police," he said. "They were unable to find it but after investigating discovered that Lambeth had taken it away.
"Someone who spotted my car arriving at the pound said that within minutes they had used a mechanical grab to pick it up by the roof instead of carefully lifting it down.
"By then it was all over - it was utterly wrecked before I had a chance to retrieve it. I have not seen it since. They cannot explain why they took away what is obviously a special, rare car."
Lambeth has admitted liability but has not paid any compensation - even though the Bristol was snatched in December 2004.
Meanwhile, Mr Stewart has been reduced to driving an ageing van. "I cannot believe it has taken so long," he said. "It was a very special car that I bought in 1984 after a long search. I found it with a dealer in Wimbledon. It is unlikely I shall find another."
The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency confirmed Mr Stewart's Bristol would have been a "classic" car because of its age and not subject to road tax. It would have displayed a tax disc declaring "Nil payment" - A Lambeth spokesman said: "Solicitors acting for Lambeth council have accepted breach of duty on behalf of their client. The council apologises to Mr Stewart.
"As the matter is currently being litigated, we cannot comment further at this time but we are working hard to resolve this case as soon as possible."

A tragic loss - the 411 was one of Bristol's finest, the poor bloke must be completely gutted - I hope he screws them for every possibly penny and that heads will roll. It will however never replace a wonderful car...
What kind of brain-dead jobsworth crushes a car like that? Just how stupid do you have to be?
If I were an ecentric millionaire I would love to get a top lawyer to nail them to a tree for this - compensation to include three years driving in a comprable car.
Of course it wouldn't really punish those that did it - it all goes on the Council Tax...
If a government minister was responsible they would be asked to resign, do councillors ever resign?
Was the 'service' farmed out to a commercial enterprise I wonder?

Absolutely gutted for the guy and total crass stupidity from Lambeth council, I own a '69 car and my tax disc has a big 'NIL' on it too. Anyone did that to my car, I'd be devastated and whoever did that would sorely pay for their mistake.
I saw an owner's 411 when I picked up some car seats for my P6 in St.Albans. One of the best classic Bristols.
As for not admitting liability, that's just salt in the wound. F**king bastards.

Lambeth council are real shits .
when i was a poor apprentice on a YTS. I saved up for a Mk3 cortina it was out side Stockwell collage. I was first in my group to collage in the morning , At lunch time i was called by another guy that they were ticketing cars .
I went out side to find my new car ( a old MK3 cortina) being put on a Lorry the driver and traffic warden both side my car was legally parked but it had a ticket to remove on it so it had to go and as it was in the air that could not put it down.
The police did not want to no! and i had to go to to the other side of London borrow £180 i believe the relice fee was and return to get my car rel-iced there was no appeal policy .
It was pay or we will get rid of your car and the police backed them up.

i think someone from the council needs to be bundled in the back of a van and driven to a remote location for their crimes.

And there you have it..... It is genuinely a crime that they have commited. Don't believe this accident bollox. It's a crime, and the government should apologise, compensate, punish and learn.... Swiftly. As swiftly as they destroyed a fine piece of our heritage.
The police do not want to prosecute the council and the council`s. Councils put pressure to protect there councillor and employees .
The only route is for the county court , As they will not be able to defend there actions or explain why they removed and destroyed the car .
You will find that most council then settle out of court.
