hello

looking for a classic head unit, only needs FM as I will hard wire it up to the ipod using a dennison FM modulator.

looking for somthing that will have a good sound quality and possibly connect it to an amp if required.

I currently have a CD/MP3 head unit with lots of flashing LEDs and to be fair its a nice little unit but would like to keep with the classic feel of the car and have a old head unit in the dash instead with the ipod hidden out the way.

anyone know what the best 70's head unit is that has decent sound quality?

thanks in advance.

Hope this helps. I hear the iPod gains a nice bassy tone from the brass speaking tube

I binned all of mine - you can't hear anything over the noise of the engine anyway . I did have one excellent quality one - It's been several years since I saw it - will try to remember the make if I can

A US web site reccommended using active computer speakers hiden behind the dash. Suggested that Creative T20's were good, they have a 12 volt connection and plenty of output. Then connect i pod or portable fm tuner. Plan to do this with my Healey where the engine/exhaust/carbs are serious opposition.

Didn't Becker used to be the ones to have?

My Scimitar left the factory with a Radiomobile 8-track.

I remember seeing adverts recently in classic car magazines for new but retro styled head units, all the latest technology but with a traditional looking fascia and controls. I think quite a few top brands do them.

Here you go:

I'll get me coat...

I've always fancied a silver late seventies / early eighties Pioneer for my '83 Lancia (original Voxson didn't come with car). The only issue I have is the concern for it being nicked... Mind you, a CSC exhaust isn't a bad thing.

BTW - the prices on those LW / MW units are a bit steep by my estimation. I'm old enough to remember how awful they sounded.

Didn't want to say that in case my memory was wrong

But definately FM in early 80s and much later seperate amps to head units (probably 90s)

The modern ones look like what they are, modern copies of classics, better still you could get a "new" (20 plus years old) boxed FM car radio, try eBay, classic car parts, for realistic prices

Sound quality isn't brilliant by today's standards, even back then we used to upgrade the speakers (stick to two)

I got a "new" unopened box 70s LW/MW and on a seperate time a "new" unopened box uprated single pod mono speaker off eBay they were genuine and fantastic (with genuine 70s sound quality)

Be patient a good one will turn up
