my brother needed a cheap car as the 'light' restoration we are doing on his mini is taking a little longer than we thought.....

he had bought a cheap scabber to bum about in for a few weeks, but once the test ran out we couldnt swop the insurance back to the mini, as C.I.S wont insure cars over 25 years old eek

this has proved to be a real blessing in disguise, as we where paying 600 quid a year for both of us to drive the mini.

had a squint on fleabay for a cheap local car - nothing really good, everything is either too dear, or big smokers that need taxing, so not worth bothering as it makes them too dear.

had a look in classics and found a herald, 20 miles from home, bit shabby with a buy it now for 400 quid - my bro went for a look and chipped the guy to 375 (thanks to all the time wasters on ebay the guy just wanted someone to turn up, pay, take it away on a trailer (was on sorn))

its a looker (from 20 feet) has a horrific respray, and needed a few jobs doing, hi-beam, indy flasher didnt work, oil pressure light was on, heater didnt work etc.

we got all the little jobs done yesterday and its a blast - starts first time, runs like a good one!

the box whines like a 1930s crash box, but all the little jobs above where fixed using stuff kicking round the garage!

best of all, insurance is 125 for both of us - and the mini will be similar once its finished - lancaster insurance clap

its the first time we have ventured into triumphs, both of us are mini through and through - its a real beast

I ran a Vitesse Mk1 convertible as my only wheels for a couple of years - hideous swing-axle lift-off ovesreer, but great fun and so easy to look after - real Meccano car.

Lots of comedy 'passenger door falls open on roundabouts' moments, too.

And you survived the Vitesse's brakes? yikes

There have been numerous Heralds in my family; they're definitely good fun and the enthusiasts are the nicest people you're likely to meet in classic car circles.

I can remember my grandmother getting her Herald up to 85mph on the dual-carriageway once when I was a child... Oh, happy memories...
