I noticed that the milage on my newly aquired Bayliss Thomas has not altered in ten years. Could be something to do with having no milometer cable attached ! Found what I guess is the old outer cable under the drivers seat in a bag, sadly the important inner cable is not to be found. This means I do not have a pattern to have a new cable made, so I am hoping that my friends here may be able to help me.

As you know my car has the Meadows 4 cylinder engine, I think it is the 4 E.B. Now I guess this is mated to a standard gearbox which has a gear driven speedo drive on the layshaft. The speedo on the dashboard is an original to the car named COWEY. Any help or advise appreciated as I assume that a correct gauge cable will need to be fitted. I wonder if the same cable as used on the Alvis may be correct?

I have sent the carb' off to Burlen's for a mechanical restoration as it kept flooding and seemed the carb' is in a worn out state.

You're a glutton for punishment cranked up with some of these cars you buy!!
These are the people you need, they're excellent!

If you send them your old outer, they will make an inner to suit.
Alternatively they will use the old outer as a template and make you a complete new cable, which is what I recommend you do.

Wot O jith, I am a bit of a masocist I guess :

Thanks for the link and info, I'll give them a ring. When buying the car I noticed that only the offside side light was working so reckoned just a nearside bulb needed, but the offside light has packed up now as well laugh
Proberly earthing needs a clean.

quite a few old speedos have just a blade on the end where it goes in gearbox, and either a square or a smaller blade on the back of the speedo.

speedy cables may need a photo and some measurements to make up the correct inner.

Last Friday I had a new inner cable made for my Triumph.
The cable maker required the old outer cable, the speedo, &
the cable drive unit, from the gearbox.

The cable was made in 35 minutes, while I waited, & cost only
A$20.00. I thought it must be my birthday.

Thanks eccles, I feel a bit of digital photography coming on.

Thanks hasbeen, if I can get an inner cable made up for about a tenner here in Blighty it will be a minor miricle, more likely to be 40 pounds for me

Quick update for anyone interested, got back my speedometer which 'Speedycables' tested for me and reported all was well (FOC). Also the outer cable which had broken they carried out a good repair and of course replaced the inner cable. All in for 26 quid inc P@P, a bargain I reckon.

i could have saved you a bit of postage, i'm off home next weekend, and i'm going quite close to where speedy cables are.
they have a good reputation, and they were very helpful and quick when i needed a speedo recalibrating after changing the final drive in my Jem.

Thanks all the same eccles.
In fact the P@P was a large part of the bill, amounting to 10 pounds. But no way am I grumbling about that.Slowly I am building up my 'database' of where to go for fixes, largely due to recommendations from Ph'ers.
