A Friend is selling his Classic - Should I intervene?
Discussion
I have just learned that a good friend of mine is selling his Rover P5b that he has had and cherished for the last 12 years. A really nice example that I would love to own - possible over and above my own.
Anyway, I called him to find out why and it doesn't seem that he knows himself other than he hasn't had chance to use it over the last year or so. His Father-in Law died last year and his focus has been on his wife and Mother-in Law and taking them around at weekends but his M-I-L doesn't like getting in and out of the Rover.
He went through the 'I'm going to sell it' phase a couple of years ago and I persuaded him to use it more, which he did, fell in love with it all over again, and decided to keep it. But, that has slipped and last year he only did circa 500 miles in it.
I just know that he is going to regret selling it but am relucatant to try & talk him out of it as I feel it's his life.
Advice?

If you want it would that be in addition to your own or in place of it?
You could offer to buy it and give him first refusal to buy it back at some point, though with some sort of cost penalty so that he still had a real decision to make rather than simply being able to trust a mate to keep it for him for a while and pay for the privilege.
Just a thought. Maybe a silly one.

It would have to be instead as I already have 3 cars plus the wife's
Mmm, tricky.
My missus has said that she wants me to keep mine as I need a hobby.... fair enough
If his minds made up, well there not a lot you can do.
My advice is ask the question "What are you going to fill your time with once it's gone?"
It's a bit around the houses but he might come to the conclusion that a bit of M-I-L aggro is the price worth paying.
If it's a Admiralty Blue and White two-tone with Buckskin interior, I'd try to get your friend sectioned....
I wanted a P5B but could afford the initial purchase so opted for a P6B instead. But the above car would be very, very tempting.

The interior is a light colour but not sure its buckskin althought it is Silver Birch (Very pale Grey) over Admiralty blue so I shall have to have him sectioned I think.
