The week before last we lost the only Englishman ever to win the World Rally Championship. Richard Burns died after a long fight with a brain tumour. He was 34 years old. A superbly talented, totally committed and dedicated driver who, in 2001 was the greatest rally driver in the World - the World Champion.
His untimely death at such a young age was recorded on the inside pages of some newspapers with a few lines.
Contrast that if you will, with the death of a man who was undoubtedly very talented at the much over-rated game of football, but who decided to continue to drink knowing it would kill him sooner rather than later and who had abused the transplanted liver donated to him. Pages and pages of coverage and his funeral on TV made was almost like a state funeral.
Where do we get our sporting standards and heroes from?
Shall we debate this a little or am I alone in thinking this very odd?
