A long time ago in a galaxy far far away BBC2 ran a series of 5 minute shorts entitled "sporting greats" or something like that. One of the programmes featured a saloon car race at Crystal Palace where GM was forved to pit and then passed virtually the whole field to win the race.

Anyone else remember it?
What was the race?
Is it on commercial video/dvd?
If not, does anyone have it in a private collection?

OK, I may be looking back through rose tinted specs, but I recall it featured ome of the best driving I have ever seen.

And I know I`ve posted this before, but hopefully a newbie could come up with the goods!

It was in a series called 100 Great Sporting Moments. So long since I've seen it that I can't remember the details but I have a feeling GM was in a Viva and it was c.1969. But I do remember the awesome driving...

That's correct, it was 100 Great Sporting Moments. I think it was one of the last saloon races at the Palace in 1971, may have been 1970?
GM was in a Viva and was having a tussle with an Escort and a Camaro, but I can't remember who was driving those, (Fitzpatrick maybe in the Escort?) and I do remember Martin Birrane was just off this lead tussle in his Boss Mustang.
I remember having this on tape years ago from when it was shown on TV, but that was an old Beta tape (shows how long ago!!!) and I'm not sure I ever got around to transferring it to VHS.

Got a feeling the Escort might have been Dave Brodie's 'Run Baby Run' with the 2.1 BDA.

Camaro sounds like it could be Frank Gardner.

Pretty certain that it wasn't Brodie in 'Run Baby Run'.

I know for sure it wasn't Frank Gardner in the Camaro.

Right, I had a vague recolection of the name Thomas as the driver of the Camaro. My best mate, who nows lives in California, during a phone call tonight, came up with the Christian name of Martin.
And a quick google revealed that it was Martin Thomas. www.brdc.co.uk/brdcarchive.cfm/flag/2/member_id/155

Just have to work out who was driving the Escort.

I had a copy of this film, but the last time I had a good go at finding it I couldn't.

Its a terrific film, in which at times all three cars are sharing the very same piece of tarmac, all bumping and boring each other at great speed.

i must have another go at finding it...
