Mk 2 and Mk 3 Ford Capris, how many survive?
Discussion
I was a big Ford Capri fan back in the 70's, owning four brand new ones between 1976 and 1979.
Anyone have one now?
My 1978 3.0S (Apparently scrapped in 1990)
]
My 1979 1.6 Pinto at Ribblehead viaduct

Invoice for the Mk 3 3.0S
I
The other two were:-
A 1976 Mk 2 in Orange
A 1977 Mk2 in White with a brown vinyl roof.

Not sure why the old 'Fast Fords' are so popular now? but seeing the prices they go for in auctions I wish I could go back in time and buy a few for the peanuts that they cost back in the day.
I had a 1977, 3.0 Ghia auto in white with a vinyl roof, sunroof & electric windows. One of the rear silencers fell off one night, watched it bouncing down the road in my rear view mirror.
No idea if it's still on the road though, according to the "Check if a vehicle is taxed and has an MOT" website it is now black and 2.8L?

Lovely. That was just like my 1977 one, but with a brown vinyl roof.I had a 1977, 3.0 Ghia auto in white with a vinyl roof, sunroof & electric windows. One of the rear silencers fell off one night, watched it bouncing down the road in my rear view mirror.

Vinyl roofs were incredibly popular at that time, you never see any these days.
My 1987 2.8 Injection Special. Bought in 2003 off and old chap in Cirencester, and drove it back to the midlands. To say it was a bit tired is being gentle. You could see the floor through the osf wing without opening the bonnet.
A considerable sum of money later (fortunately over the last 22 years rather than all at once) and it's in much better shape.

Good enough that it took myself and my partner to Le Mans Classic in 2023

Saw a car identical to the above (even a D reg) this very morning driving through Harrogate around 7:30, lovely seeing one 'out in the wild'. A considerable sum of money later (fortunately over the last 22 years rather than all at once) and it's in much better shape.

Is that another Capri in the garage. A considerable sum of money later (fortunately over the last 22 years rather than all at once) and it's in much better shape.

Owned one back in the day, not now though, I have enough “Toys”
1983 2.8i Injection with dealer fitted LSD [before they became standard] 5 speed, cardinal red. It was a great cruising car, certainly no Escort on the twisty stuff, but a much better road car, especially on long Journeys. Drove down to Menton from Calais in 1 hit, 100 plus most of the way there took just over 8 hours, mind you, I was young, and the Gendarmes were mostly at lunch back then.
Another, rather peed off trip from Newcastle to Camberley in just over 3 hours.
I P,X’d it for a Renault 5 turbo 2

According to “How Many Left” there are currently 435 taxed and 312 SORN. That covers all Capri’s and I believe the numbers have to be taken with a pinch of salt.
You can deep dive the data and break it down further by year and engine size etc.

I’ve had a few Capris over the years. First was a 2000GT XLR in white with the black vinyl roof. So many memories of my time with that car. Long gone unfortunately.
Currently have a 1983 2.8i 5-speed which I’ve been looking after for the past 16 years.

If ever there was a rise and fall and rise in popularity it would be a Ford Capri.
Late 70s/early 80s it was one of the cars to have especially a 3 litre, then their popularity waned and were nowhere to be seen in the late 80s classic car boom, then there was Delboy’s crapi and now they’ve become desirable once again.

My 1974 2.0 Ghia was a one owner 60,000 mile car when I purchased it in 1990. I sold it approximately two years later and last saw it painted red around 1997. It doesn’t appear to exist any more.
I purchased a 2.8 injection special in 1999 which I think was registered C824HTU but this also seems not to have lasted. It was silver with 15” 280 wheels and a four spoke RS steering wheel. I owned it for approximately one year and sold it to someone who intended to fully restore it as it was quite a solid base.

You say it was no Escort, but I had a 83 2.8 injection that I fitted a Turbo Technics kit to, then rbtm's, Escort group 1 bilstein struts with lowered/stiffer springs. A double width/anti dive kit and stiffer bushes, and a lsd. That was a match for any RS2 or Mex I had. I wonder what happened to EHD 699Y after I sold it.1983 2.8i Injection with dealer fitted LSD [before they became standard] 5 speed, cardinal red.
