Last 917k sold for $14m, what do we think this will go for? Glittering list of owners...Reinhold Joest, Brian Redman, Dickie Attwood, Jerry Seinfeld plus the McQueen connection.

Did McQueen actually drive it at any time?

Yes, as it was owned by Solar Productions, this was the only 917 of the 3 three used in the film, that he drove (the others being leased to the film by Porsche)

Yeah that's pretty much my dream car - I'd reckon on $20m

RacingSportsCars.com only has him competitively as a listed, never drove in the #29 908/02K Flunder, chassis 908022. That's not to say he never drove it for filming purposes, of course.

I remember my Dad taking me to see "Le mans" when it came out as he wanted to see it even more than i did, i recall none of the local cinema's had it playing so we ended up in Putney [ lived in Lee-on-Solent back then]

This and the V16 Auto Union are my all time favourite care, ever! Last time i went to Beauleigh i was surprised just how small it is, stunning looking car though, and oh the noise !!!!!

$25,000,000 is my guess smile

That's a bit unfair, I felt very sorry for Mark Hales when that whole thing happened..

Wrong car.
That link is to the 908 (not this 917) owned by Solar Promotions that ran in the '70 Lemans race equipped with camera's to record the race footage that would be used in the film (which wasn't much in the end as the factory Gulf 917's all retired out of the event quite early) hence them having to film additional footage afterwards with the 3 x 917's (the 2 x loaned by Porsche, plus the 917 owned by Solar which is the one being sold)
Solar bought the 917 with the aim of McQueen actually racing in the 1970 race, in this car, but the insurance companies wouldn't allow it. McQueen did drive it for filming, but he never raced it.

I'm aware that the link is to the 908 - that's my point. The same site makes no mention of him listed to drive the 917 in the race, hence my comment about him possibly driving it non-competitively for filming.

Given the strength of feeling towards McQueen and the Le Mans film, I doubt any uncertainty around whether his posterior ever graced the seat are unlikely to affect its value.

I've already posted twice that he only drove it for the filming, that's not in dispute. He wanted to drive it in the '70 race, as that's why his production company bought it, but the Hollywood insurance companies wouldn't agree to any insurance cover. The history is well known, so no one can really claim he did ever race it.

Hey come on . Give the auction house some slack. They cant be expected to know everything. And the blurb will talk a out a "...one-owner 917K with a list if celebrity owners and drivers, a real barn find fresh from a recent restoration, never raced or rallied and with true provenance ideal for Goodwood etc. Fitted with the legendary flat 6, and carrying a spare flat 6 next to it which we believe helps with the reliability..."

I'd say £20m. Mega money, buts a mega car. Would be more but it doesn't have PASM, PDCC, Sport Chrono pack and those 15" wheels. Not even classic Teledials...

Forget the PASM, Sport Chrono and PDCC etc, it's an absolute waste of money if it doesn't have at least PCM with Apple® CarPlay and the Burmester® High-End Surround Sound System!

Jackie Stewart was intended to be McQueen's co-driver in the 1970 race. They must have waved an awful lot of money at Jackie because he wasn't particularly enamoured with Le Mans. It was to have been a JW Automotive entry, chassis number 013. As you said, McQueen's insurers took fright and vetoed the entry. It was acquired by Solar Productions and David Piper crashed during filming and lost a leg.
