Discussion
Plenty of love for the 124 cars on here - they are regularly discussed by many, like me who have owned them.
I always wince a little when I hear the cliche “over-engineered” - they aren’t - they are properly designed, conceived and executed vehicles; most other cars are just not built as well.
My favourite amongst the 124 series cars I’ve owned would be the 300TE (1991 vintage), which was a delight. So much so that I bought it back from a chap I’d sold it to.

INever thought of this being a classic,...
Thing is they are so well built, and look timelessly elegant that if you saw a well kept one on the road you'd hardly notice it. If you passed a Rover 800 or Carlton or something, you'd stop and stare. My dad had one back in the day - it was majestic. I'd love one now - an 320E or if I robbed a bank, a 500E - mid life facelift with the side cladding but orange indicators.

Maybe a JDM import that is likely to be in much nicer condition underneath.
There is a company in Japan that will sell you a restored-to-new W124 estate. Interior decor is a bit sudden but that can be specified I'd imagine.https://www.e-arrows.jp/arrowsclassicline.html
p.s They'll do you a G Wagon as well!

Interesting link, a saloon would be more to my liking , estate's generally have much bigger miles, but not necessarily a bad thing. https://www.e-arrows.jp/arrowsclassicline.html

The pillarless Coupes still look really stylish.
The E220 is the pick of them for a stylish cruiser IMO, quite economical too, had one for a few years, a friend still has it now, somehow gets his drumkit in it, Would have another 220, cannot see the advantage of a 320, nice and smooth as they are. Of course the older 300CE will hit 40 years first and beat ULEZ, the reason one is not an oprtion at the moment.anyoldcardave said:

I've had a 320 and an E36. The 220 is underpowered for such a heavy car, in my experience. Moreso the 200 they got in Europe.anyoldcardave said:

I’m had an E220 C124 coupe. It was economical, but as an experience, not a patch on the 6-cylinder cars I’ve had (E280, 300TE). I can’t see why you wouldn’t buy the 6-pot if you weren’t doing business mileage in it.
The diesels had a character of their own, but I’ve not had the chance of owing one.
