Just wondering if anyone knows what the last British made car was to feature a starting handle and when the last one was made. Thanks for any and all positive responses.

My Morris Minor had one. Not sure if they all had them right up to the end, but they went out of production in 1971.

Somebody on here mentioned the Mk1 Escort van, I seem to remember. That was introduced in April 1968.

I seem to recall the BT Commer Vans from the early 80s were the last vehicles you could buy new with a starting handle

2CV?

Range Rovers had them until 1983 (I can't imagine many owners of new Rangies wanting to start their car with a starting handle now smile )

Not a British sports car but more fun than one British sports car I owned (it had an octagonal badge - sorry ) was my 2 CV. It was a 1976 car and did have a starting handle. Not that I ever needed to use it.

I do have memories , now very distant , of dad starting one his Humber Hawks with a handle . GPs had strong arms and wrists back then .

Yes mate, ours was a 1972 van with one. I've never seen one on the Mk2 Escort, 1975 introduction.

My wife had a 71 when we got married. It had a starting handle that I taught her to use. Avoided calling the AA out so many times.

Thanks Steve, I knew I'd read about it somewhere.

I would assume the series 3 Landie up to the mid 80s would mark the last car you can start with a handle, but I don't know if they came with one.

I bought Mrs Banana a 2CV while she was at uni. I ran it for a week before handing over to her and one evening, on the way home from work, it stopped. The AA were quick to respond and the guy spotted immediately that it had no fan belt. In fact, judging by the rust on the pulley, it hadn't had one for a while. The battery had accumulated and provided enough energy to start and run the car, up until I had to drive with the headlights on.

I bought a new belt and fitted it (which you could do in 2 mins because the fan was flexible enough to bend the belt over). Mrs B never knew.

Hillman Imp and variants (1963 - 1976) had a starting handle option (with hole in rear bumper) when they first came out but not sure when the option was deleted.

Thanks guys. I was thinking either a Morris Minor or Ford Pop. Didn't know about the Range Rover, gave me a bit of a laugh, considering how they have evolved!

Yes they did - the starting handle was part of the standard tool kit up to the end of production in 1985.

My 1982 2.25 diesel SIII had one - mostly used it for doing the tappets but I did once, as an academic exercise, start it on the handle. It was a summer's day, the Landy had just done a 2hr trip, and the hand throttle was set wide open. It needed the same technique as a Lister-Petter cement mixer engine - get it on the start of a compression stroke, then sort of karate chop it over TDC.

You wouldn't have a hope in hell of starting a diesel Landy on the handle from cold (when you're most likely to need to do so...).

Yep took one look at my Landy starting handle and the diesel engine and thought if it comes to that I'll walk smile

My Bedford HA van had one ( tucked in behind the number plate to confuse you). I think they still made them in the early eighties for BT and other large customers although I'm not sure whether the last of them still had a starting handle.
