Seeing 1930's 'Silver Arrows' driven in anger
Discussion
Wasn't sure where to post this, but I thought it fitting enough under 'Yesterdays Heroes'...
One of the things I'd like to see is the rear engine Auto Union(s) / contemporary Mercedes cars driven in at least a spirited manner (a la FOS) if not outright full competition speed. Any ideas how I would track down and plan ahead to see that? UK ideally, but prepared to head into Europe (I do like the idea of seeing one flying up the Grossglockner, but that maybe a bit much to hope for...).

You could contact Mercedes-Benz World at Brooklands, and I'm sure they'll be able to tell you, or direct you to a contact at the MB Museum in Germany for when/if they have any plans to demo run any of their stuff in UK/Europe.One of the things I'd like to see is the rear engine Auto Union(s) / contemporary Mercedes cars driven in at least a spirited manner (a la FOS) if not outright full competition speed. Likewise, probably Audi UK for any of the Audi museum stuff.

I've seen the Auto Union at Shelsley Walsh - it looked like a right handful, even at demonstration speeds!
I'm also pencilling in a visit to Shelsley this year - having never been. What you saw would have been exactly what i'm after really, but I don't suppose that'll happen again any time soon....

Tony Dron drove the 1937 W125 and the1939 W154 at Donington a few years back, once he'd got the hang of it he 'gave it beans'.
I've some never previously seen photos of the Silver Arrows there in1937 somewhere, I must dig them out.
Nah, don't bother. I shouldn't think anyone's interested I've some never previously seen photos of the Silver Arrows there in1937 somewhere, I must dig them out.
I remember seeing a Mercedes and an Auto Union on a test day at Silverstone in '89, back when Neil Corner used to race them in UK club events. They were absolutely magnificent.
Saw them at what I think was the Christie’s International Historic Festival back in the late ‘80’s and early ‘90’s. Also a couple of times at Donington; I think in about ‘98 there was a “Return of the Silver Arrows” event where they were demonstrated along with a then recent McLaren Mercedes F1 car. Still got the photos and a video clip - awesome event, with hardly anyone there IIRC.

The F1 was driven by Nick Heidfeld and kept playing up - it would shut the engine down on upshifts and was towed in twice - that was Donington. The demo at Silverstone with Dron was notable for eyes streaming in the stands from the fuel they were running - it had the distinct aroma of pear drops.
There was one demo where they sent a SWB Quattro rally car with Stig Blomquist as a support and he was absolutely on it trying to stay with them and it was barely ever in a straight line - he was my overriding memory
