Just glancing through the Catalogue for Anglia Auctions January Sale and came across this BMW E3 3.0 S . My Uncle back in the day had a lovely 2500 Model in Metallic Blue which he ran for much of the Seventies . Its a pity when you see them mucked about with in this way because its additional money for any Enthusiast interested in returning the Car to its former glory . What's its money.......a struggle at £10k ?

The older I get the more cynical (?) I find myself getting about this era of classic cars when you see them similar to this. Probably something to do with me wanting to see my pension pot grow a little more than sink money into a money pit like this lol. Honestly, to me the car is worth little more than scrap value.......
It would be a labor of love to bring it back to anything like original factory condition. And cost a fortune.
So, the first thing is, what would be your goal for it?
I am sure there is a fair bit of rust lurking under the err 'Alpina-esque' stickers. So there's several thousand in bodywork to rectify.
I just looked on a German car website and standard, original examples seem to be in the high teens, twenties of thousands Euros. So, not particularly valuable.
It's current appearance will narrow it's audience, and not quite in line with the 'keep the patina' mantra. It looks like it ram raided a 1970's motor factors shop and stuff stuck to it on the way out....
Mild rant over....

My initial thought was that if it had been a Coupe then it would have been a completely different story . One mans dream becomes another mans nightmare

That one's actually not too bad.* You'd be doing a full body restoration anyway, assuming you were buying it for that purpose, and it's listed at no reserve so you might get a bargain as everyone else will be put off.

* I say that because years ago, the dealer group I worked for had a customer who insisted on buying a new Rover 100 (Metro) from us, even though we were a Mitsubishi franchise. He proceeded to cover every square inch of the paintwork with patterns - some stick-on, some hand-painted. Same with the inside. The highlight was a gas stove installed between the front seats to heat the interior on cold mornings.

Interesting car that's for sure. I'd question the legitimacy of the advert however, as it mentions having a 'later 3.5 engine fitted', however from memory it doesn't look like the 3.5 litre engine, rather the 3.0/3.3.

E3's are rare things these days.........there's only about half a dozen 3.3 versions left, likely not much of the other versions left.

Getting parts will be a nightmare.

Great cars in their day though, and that particular cars days was a very long time ago laugh

That's got to have been sitting in a garage for 35+ years I would think?

Yeah I had a 3.0Si, great car. Handled really well for a big saloon, could have done with a 5 speed gearbox though - remember being able to get it sat on the rev limiter in 4th!

I have a soft spot for E3's

My dads friend bought a brand new 2500 in 1973 and it felt very special at the time though when I think back it was actually quite basic.

In 1979 my brother in law bought a 3.0Si, now that was special, metallic blue with blue velour, it was only 3 years old (R reg) and was wonderful to drive, the way the rear squatted under acceleration in fact I think it was the fastest accelerating 4 door saloon at the time.

This 3.0S at Anglia is interesting, look beyond the stick on tat and it could be worth saving if its good underneath, difficult to put a value on it. I will watch with interest.

Someone has been sticking tat onto poor old thing until quite recently as a lot of those roundels are the BMW M 50th anniversary version from last year.

The roundel stickers on the side and rear panel are BMW motorsport ones from the 70's and 80's.

The bare engine may well be an early 3.5 with a distributor to which the owner fitted the twin Solexes.

It depends how rotten it is, as ever. It'll be ok if cheap enough.

Looking back to the Seventies its incredible to think of the " rise " of BMW in this Country with the 3 Series becoming as common as a Ford Cortina was back then . I remember riding around in the Uncles 2500 back in the Seventies and you simply wouldn't see another .

Yep.
The lad I sat next to one year in junior school, was from an Egyptian family, with own business and his Dad bought a brand new E12 520 in the summer of 1974, and I can remember the two of us getting picked up from school in it, the day after he collected it from the dealer. Its still a vivid recollection, 50 years later.
When my Dad and all my uncles (bar one) at the time were driving old British bangers from the late 50's and early 60's, this was like taking a ride in a spaceship!!

Talking of Spaceships , who can forget the R080 of the same period ? Again a couple of largely unmemorable rides in one courtesy of a friend of my Fathers . For some reason I remember the interior as being very spartan though the Motoring Press raved about them at the time . I believe it may have been Car of the Year back then though in all honesty I may be confusing this with some Motoring Magazine accolade rather than an Industry one .
Its great we have these memories of inevitably men who drove some particular car or other . A decade when a Man landed on the Moon but as regards sticking in our memory , inevitably its Mr Husseins BMW or Big Jims Mexico

You're not confusing it with anything as the Ro80 won the European Car of the Year Award in 1968.

Understandable, they really did become the must have car of the 80’s. It felt very special to me in 93 as a 20 year old getting an immaculate low miles 86 320i SE.
