Hi,

Just signed up to P'heads and want to know if anyone has a reliable source of historic data as to how many vehicles of specific make/models. are registered in the UK. I have tried many on-line sites including 'How Many Left' etc., but none seems to go back far enough or recognise my babies!

I have a 1965 - '64(1/2) Mustang 289C V8 conv and a '72 Merc 250C Coupe... both L/Hookers of course!

Tks

As you say, "How many left" is a complete waste of time.

You'll have to contact the relevant car clubs. They are your only source.

Regarding How Many Left, it's not a question of it not going back far enough. The data on there is current and includes all cars currently registered regardless of age. However, it can only report what the car is registered as on the V5. For example, there are currently over 70,000 Fords registered without a model name, because that's all that is shown on the V5. What does your V5 say for your cars? If it's vague and non-specific then you're out of luck finding your own vehicle, let alone any others that might be registered as something slightly different.

Mercedes 250C is listed on there, but again it relies on the model of your car and all the other examples of the same model being correctly identified on the V5, otherwise the data is useless. It gets further diluted when manufacturers regurgitate old model names for new models.

Greenhell,

Tks for your input. I have since realised this too. I have indeed had mixed feedback from other sources like Honest John etc., so it is a bit of a minefield. I note and agree with your comment regarding the similarity in model types etc. Unsurprisingly, my '65 Mustang is not listed at all!

Very much appreciate your input.

Cheers

It is a pretty dim witted system though, try sunbeam alpine; it lists alpine, alpine auto and mk I to IV but cars are actually mk I & II in early 50’s and series I to V 59 to 68 with later cars just alpine. Not sure how you find out how many left from such a mish mash of mixed up numbers

Tks for your input.

One would have thought DVLA would have such data...simply by numbers but I guess its far to specific, and as a previous respondent pointed out, it is also a matter of what is recorded on V5C, so that have draw a blank.

I'll keep delving and post anything productive.

Tks again.

The data for how many left and all the others comes from DVLA, part of the Government Open Data project.

https://www.data.gov.uk/

Because the data is basically taken from V5s which themselves are transferred from the old brown log books which were filled in by hand the data is all over the shop. Would be lovely to have a clean data set with a proper taxonomy but it's never going to happen due to the size of it.

The exact data set used for How Many Left is here, (and it does say this on the site.)

https://www.gov.uk/government/collections/vehicles...

Whole load of other good stuff to look at here:

Austin - and all previous respondents.

Got a helpful reply from the Roads and Local Group, Travel and Environment Data and Statistics (TRENDS) Division, Department for Transport, which confirmed the link you sent me.

They specifically referred me to the Vehicle Licensing Statistics Data Files in Table VEH0120 for the number of vehicles by make and model and body type by quarter. The table VEH0120 is the first reference to stats on the page. It gave me pretty much all I was seeking.

As you (Austin) said, it is only what is on V5C's etc.,, and open to interpretation, but is as detailed as I was seeking.

Thanks all.
