Don't forget that it has 2 components. Hydrolastic fluid and Nitrogen.
Many garages just put more and more Hydro in there which gives the right height but makes the ride awful! If you have the right balance of the 2, these cars ride really nicely.
To refill the Nitro the spheres need to come out and be sent away for reconditioning and filling. Well worth it though.

The units are probably knackered by now, the good news is there is a company refurbishing these to a very high standard

Not sure if it is the same people but I had mine done by a bloke called Kevin, 07895513800
Brilliant service. Fast turnaround and the refilled spheres have been on the car more than a year now, no problems at all.
As for filling the fluid into the system once they had been gassed up. I used one of those gadgets regularly seen on Ebay, which look like a modified grease gun. That's exactly what they are! Bit of a fiddle to undo, otherwise a good and cheap solution.
I currently have a Metro as a daily and was in urgent need of a car so I pumped that up, fluid only. Correct ride height but rediculously hard ride. Still it'll do me until the weather gets better and I can do the job properly. In contrast to the Metro, the MG, which is essentially the same system, is one of the best riding small cars ever IMHO.
