Top motor choices those IMHO, I can recall the 70's oil crisis when barges were being driven into scrapyards cos petrol was to expensive to run them. What was the cost of juice then??

Hi vroom

its a 1972 3.0 CSL, one of 500 rhd made holmagate the csi into world production car racing for the 1972-73 season. its almost totaly original, 2 owner car with 80k on the clock. more pics at
www.villagephotos.com/pubbrowse.asp?folder_id=985404
The maserati is a 1983 Merak, just as it left the factory, never needed painting or any mecanical work and is totaly rust free having spent most of its 22 years in controled storage and only doing 14,000 miles in that time. Realy wanted a 308 gtb but couldnt find the right one, plus i can get the kids in the back of the Merak on the school run.
The shadow is low miles (70k ish) and superb not every ones cup of tea but suprising quick ( you tend not to notice as its so quite, but ive embarased many a new car) and agile with the harvey baily handling kit fitted. Cheap as chips to buy, hasnt been costly to service (around £80 for a full service doing it my self) but drinks like its going out of fashion (worst 9mpg, best 17mpg ave around 13-14mpg).Dont realy no what it is about the shadow but has some thing no other car has, aint sure what it is but all the other cars I own you tend to `turn up` in them. In the Rolls you arrive.buy a good one while there cheap....
The mgb is a 1965 ex california car converted to rhd and I rebuilt it last year. Cheapest car to run as parts are so cheap, free tax and £80 a year to insure.Just quick enougth to have fun in and nice when the sun shines.
will post some pics of my other old caars when i have a few mins.

Are you not due a shafting in the wallet when the next major hydraulic service comes round at 96k? Or do you not put enough miles on it for that to happen very soon?

The amount of miles I do in it , it will take me till im around 108.....I tend to do a yearly maitance program. Last year was major engine service and gearbox filter , front brake caliper seals and master cylinder seals. This year so far its half way through a rear brake caliper seal rebuild and also replacing the seals in the self leveling and drain and refill diff. Also a small engine service (oil and filter).
next year will be big engine service again and a small amount of rust attended too (small bubble in back wheel arch and small crak in front wing bottom) going to cut out rusty metel and replace with new steel. The wheel arches are around £80 and the wing patch £40.Then a bit of paint work.

These cars realy arnt dear to repair. Unlike most cars you tend to buy new parts and dump the old, with the rolls you take the assemblys apart and rebuild. So for a rear self leveling sensor its around £160 each exchange,a rebuild kit is around £18.So i always tend to remove the part, strip, repaint and reasemble. Its very rewarding and great for de-stressing. I do all my own maitance and the Rolls is always a pleasure...unlike the Maserati. With that every thing is always a up hill strugle. I will now quote a passage from the maserati service bulitin from early 80`s..... When replacing engine rear water pipes, pipes must be fitted before engine fitting, like a Hilman Imp. So it tells me 2 things, maserati must have taken a Imp apart to know this 2) if the rubber front water hose gose pop you have to take out the engine... to take out the engine you need to remove the gear box. To remove the gear box the exhaust manifolds need to be removed, to remove the exhaust manifolds the top wish bones need to be removed ect ect..... So around 50 hours at £40++ a hour. Almost makes £110 for a air filter seem cheap.
After a quote for £2k for a clutch replacement (£480 parts) it may have to go...unless I fancy doing it my self with no work shop manual and limited parts manual and I have all the avalible manuals ect .
I thin I realy need a Porsche 930 3.3 Turbo.....

Hi
The turbo motor was being built up for the CSL, full job with cosworth pistons, big valve head, special carank,3,800 bore and stroke, light weight rods and pins ec ect. Then all of a sudden it no longer seemed like a good idea so changed the pistons back to high compreshion je forged ones and wiring up through a TEC 3 programable ECU. So far on the dyno with out any ancilarys it producing around 280 bhp. The idea is to remove the original engine that needs a light refresh (valve seals ect) and store it, fit the new engine to thrash around in. Then if I ever want to sell the car I can turn it back to original.
The Porsche 3.3 930 Turbo is being collected on Friday, looks like I found my self a Bargin...just dont tell my wife ive been on ebay again......

That Merak is stunning, one of my all time favourite cars. Just beautiful.

But from your posts, do we have to assume that it has now gone to make way for the 930 turbo?
