Could anyone help recommend a decent garage/mechanic in Surrey or Hampshire who specialises in pre-war cars? I could do with a hand on a few jobs, especially electrical, which I can't fathom out.

Many thanks

Cant help directly but I have found that contacting local vintage car car clubs usually comes up trumps.

It’s over 10 years since I lived down that way but there used to be a place called rep cars in leatherhead. The main business was more a body shop but the owner had a separate workshop where he restored very old classic cars as what appeared to be a side business.

What car is it? (And which war?!)

There is a lot of difference between a 1904 car and a 1939 car.

Walter Heale is a good shout, he is quite high end / vintage racing car based.

Thanks guys, I'll check him him out - it's a 1935 Lagonda, so the second one!

Mis-read the title. I thought it was about servicing cars in the period before WW2. So it’s about servicing a car that was built pre-war.

Go with the advice to use a specialist if it’s a Lagonda.. At first I assumed that the question related to basic cars of the 1930s like Austin, Ford, Morris, even MG. With these ladder chassis , bolted construction they can be repaired, serviced etc by lots of traditional small garages or even ‘ the average amateur’. Spares can be sourced easily, too. The big enemy is, of course, rust.No doubt costs will be higher at a noted specialist, but should be reflected in the value of the car. Not so for the everyday small cars which can be bought roadworthy from about £5k.
